She was fourteen now, and she hoped that this year would be different.

Thanksgiving was fun of course, but there were so many business people at the dinner that it felt more like a meeting than a holiday.

They had promised her they would make it for Christmas that year. Promised.

She hadn't run inside like she had the year before. Instead she wandered over to the Christmas tree and recalled opening her presents all alone on Christmas morning. She smiled sadly. At least that year she'd have her parents, and she could forget all about the sad year she was all alone.

As Christmas day got closer she regained some of her Christmas cheer. On the 24th she woke up and ran downstairs, ready to call her parents and be assured that they would be there by that night....

That wasn't what she had gotten.

And now there she was... opening presents alone by a grand Christmas tree, wallowing quite unashamedly all by herself. It wasn't that her presents weren't good, but she knew that it would have been all the more amazing if she had her family to open with. She finished opening the last present and she put it in her bag, leaving all the wrapping paper under the tree as she walked back to her room.

As she was looking down she ran into something. She almost fell but she was caught before she made it far.

"Are you alright?"

Zelda looked at the speaker, tears staining her cheeks and reflecting the glimmering lights adorned all over the house.

"I-I'm fine," she said.

"You don't look fine," he replied.

She shook her head and then a choked sob escaped her. She turned red as she turned away from the boy; she was embarrassed at crying in front of him like she was.

"...Your parents didn't make it again?" he asked gently.

Zelda looked back at him in confusion. How did he... Her eyes widened slightly as she recognized him from the year before. "N-no... They didn't," she said after she regained control of her raggedy voice.

"I'm Link," he introduced suddenly as he held out his hand. "And... I've finished work so... could I maybe keep you company?"

She stared at him and then smiled. "Nice to meet you Link... sure," she replied. "And you probably already know my name but... I'm Zelda."

"Nice to meet you Zelda. Can I call you Zel?"

"S-sure?"
