Chapter 1 - Double Birthday

It was 13th August, and Emily and Michelle were 16 today. They were both ‘popular’ at Eton High Secondary; and the twins were very talented young girls; they just didn’t know it yet. Emily is the first to get her powers, but they are completely by chance.

She had powers and abilities that were far more advanced in human technology; that no-one else had in the world, or even the universe for that matter. It was something you could only find in the depths of a dream or a comic book.

Emily had 5 friends all of which hated her, although they didn’t show this: Amy Black, Amelia Bernd, Jane Dapnu, Alice David and Becky Smith. They pretended to like her, and invited them to all their parties, sleepovers, and other social gatherings.

So far this morning, she had gotten out of bed, and was getting dressed in her school uniform. She suddenly realised it was hers and Michelle’s 16th birthday today.

“Yes! It’s finally here. I’ve been waiting for our sweet 16th party forever. Now all I have to do is get out of the house without Joe and Alice noticing...” Emily mumbled to herself. Her twin sister then came jumping up the stairs to greet her a happy birthday.

“Happy Sweet 16th, twin!” She cried to her, almost crying with happiness.

Michelle and Emily had been the best of twin friends since they could speak. They did everything together; shopped, went to the same classes, and even helped each other with their homework! If Emily accidentally got a detention for something; Michelle would be there with her, and wait until it ended.

“Thanks Michelle. Hey, do you think Joe or Alice will let me go to Amy’s party later on?” Emily said as she gave Michelle her present. They had always called their parents by their first name; ever since they could remember. Their mother had said if they called her ‘mum’, she would apparently sound old and wrinkly.

“I’m not sure Emily. I think she has the day planned for us anyway; after we get home from school obviously.” Emily groaned in annoyance. Michelle giggled at her sister. “Come on, let’s go get the ‘birthday breakfast’ over and done with” Michelle said to Emily, trying to distract herself with her present.

Emily opened hers first, as she was first born. It was a beautiful pair of earrings, with a matching bracelet and necklace.

“It’s....Wow. I’m speechless sis” She said, tears coming to her eyes with happiness. “Hey, I saw these in the shops! I kept looking at them” Emily said, blinking the happy tears away, laughing in happiness.

“Remember I was in town with you the other day shopping? I saw you were looking at them and your eyes sparkled. So when you were in another shop, I sneaked out and got them for you” Michelle told her sister.

"Thanks twin.” - Emily winked at Michelle and hugged her in appreciation - “You’re going to love your present! Open it!” She said as she handed the small box to her. She almost dropped Michelle’s present, shaking with joy.

Inside Michelle’s box, there was a pretty necklace, and a pair of matching earrings.

“They’re adorable sis! Thanks.” She gave her a smile of obvious amusement. “Come on. Let’s get this day over with.” She said as she got up giggling, and stood in the doorway, waiting for Emily.
