Chapter Three

Gracie's POV

I sat quietly in Hayden's small blue truck, squished between Mason and Haley. Somewhere in all the commotion, One of the two had rung her, explaining the situation. I told Hayden to tell her she didn't have to come, but Hales insisted and drove straight over to the school.

I clutched a bottle of water to my chest as I was still recovering from my fainting accident. We followed closely behind the cop car. I was supposed to be in it with them, but Mason had convinced them that friends and comfort was more needed right now than questions being thrown at me relentlessly. Reluctantly, they agreed to meet us at the hospital. It did look as if they had more to say to me, but Hayden, being Hayden, told them that anything can wait right now. 'Theres only so much her brain can take,' I quote that from her directly.

Right now as I sat quietly in the car, it was like watching everything from afar. I wasn't completely there, you know? My mind was else where. I don't even remember when I got into the car.

I stared out the window, not knowing what to do, I still couldn't cry I wanted-actually, I don't know what I wanted at the moment. I sighed and pressed my cheek against the cold pane.

I thought of my family...the old family car was beaten on the side road, but as I peered in, no one was there. as I looked up, I saw them all standing there, looking at me with loving eyes as I looked back at them. I ran closer to them, embracing them, inviting the warmth that they brought. I smiled at that.

I felt a hand on my back, bringing me down to earth. They were gone, nothing was going to change that. This is my life now, this is reality.

"Hey, wake up Gracie. We're here," Mason softly said rubbing my back. I opened my eyes and looked at the building we had parked in front and sadly looked down. I sniffed as I remembered why I was here. "Shh, it's okay. I know that's not what you want to hear right now, but you need to know that we will always be here for you, okay Grace?" He whispered. I nodded and felt his arms wrap around my back in a gentle hug.

"Okay guys, this is it." I saw Hayden step around her truck. Her usual glowing and hyper self was gone, replaced by a comforting, serious girl. I lifted my arm out to her and she gladly walked into our arms. "Oh Gracie, screw being calm!" she cried and buried her face in my hair.

"Hey, Hayden I think it's supposed to be the other way around," Hales softly smiled. I could tell that she was slightly amused.

"I know but it's just it's-" she started blubbering.

"We know, but we have to go now, the 'you-know-who' are here and are waiting." She said referred to the police. She then waited for us to compose ourselves before continuing on. I didn't make an effort to sort out my dress. I mean who cares how they saw me; they'd only know me now as the girl who lost her family.

With that, Mason and Hales held my hand and walked with me to the hospital doors following behind the three police men. Hayden was quietly tailing behind us. When we approached the entrance, I stopped and took a long breath.

"It's alright, Grace. You can take as long as you want now, the police are just checking in." Mason squeezed my hand in support. I just looked ahead of me and went in, walking very slowly-almost cautiously.
