Chapter 5: Golden Wings

Every year, the students of the guardian angel classes hold a combat and test tournament against each other to see what rank angel you are. It's Called the Golden Wings tournament. I train very hard each year for that week. I always end up somewhere in the top 10 rankings, but never top 5, out of the 100 ranks for twenty-something-million guardian angels. That's why this event is a week, sometimes longer. The top three 1st rank angels every year always end up being Evangeline, an angel named John, and another named Zara. Rose gets either 5th or 6th every year. I'm ready this year, I'm ready to step up my game, my goal is to make it to the top 5. Gunnar, and recently Rose now which is awesome, and I have been studying and training hard for this week. Day 1, everyone is crowding the skies and road to get in the arena. I passed by healers, messengers, attendants, and many other Angels. Then an angel walked up, a healer, "you're in the guardian class." I look over at her, she had glasses and wore her black hair up in a bun. I nod, "and you're in the healer class." She nods "good luck fighting out there. My name is Vera." I hold out my hand, "Thank you Vera, I'm Serena." She shakes my hand, this gets me even more motivated, one more person to try and make proud. We eventually get into the arena and I meet up with Gunnar and Rose in the guardians training hall. How this works is on the first day, teams of two will be made and go against each other until day 4, then we split up. There's a huge monitor where we'll be able to see the matches , and which teams go up first. Gunnar and I always team up. Lucky little Rose was asked to be Evangeline's partner, she was so happy to tell us the news. We just hung out until it was one of our teams to go, then Rose and Evangeline was called up. Gunnar and I wish them luck as we fly over to the monitor to watch. They were up against a team of two boys. "Go Rose!" I cheered. Rose took out her vorpal sword and Evangeline, her whip axe. The two teams start the fight, Rose goes after a blonde angel who had a bow and bomb arrows. Evangeline goes after a black haired boy with heterochromia iridium eye colors of blue and purple, with a hammer bomb. Rose goes up to try and slice her opponent, but he jumps up and shoots arrows at Rose. As the arrows come, rose slices the arrows and the explode in front of her, with Evangeline, her and her opponent keep slamming their weapons but keep missing each other. For this round they put a five minute time limit, they're at two minutes left and the match heats up. Then I'm thinking Rose had an idea, she looked like she was trying to communicate with Evangeline. Then Rose stayed behind while Evangeline went up against the two opponents herself. The two boys smirked, thinking they got the upper hand here, but then Evangeline spooks them when she swims her axe around at them. The blade of her axe gets bigger which makes them jump back out of the way, Rose flies above them, pointing her sword down, and she rushes down at the two causing them to scream, that made me laugh. Before Rose makes contact, the siren sounds. "Evangeline and Rose win!" I cheer, holding my happy hugs and screams back from Gunnar because this is only just the beginning of this tournament. We go to meet up with Evangeline and Rose and I hug the little squirt. "Good job that was awesome!" Rose blushes a bit and hugs back. "Thank you haha." Evangeline chuckles and pats her head, "That was a really good plan. Very impressive." Rose's face turned red, "Ohhhhhh it was nothing haha." Before anyone could say anything else, my and Gunnar's names are called to get out onto the ring. Evangeline and Rose wish us luck as we head out. Gunnar looks over at me, I could see from the corner of my eye, and I felt his hand hold mine and he entertained his fingers with mine. I look over at him and he just smiles. I shrug and hold his hand back as we make it to the fighting ring. When we stepped onto the ring, I felt my excited and pumped up heart sink, we were up against a team with one of the greatest angels, Zara. "Oh boy..." I heard Gunnar whisper to himself. I look at him, "it's okay. At least it's the first round, this shouldn't shift our rank on the board... Right?" He nods, "I know but... If we lose there's a really small chance of us at least getting to the top 10." I smile, "Hey, we can do this okay? We'll make it up there. Just don't think of the fact it's Zara." I laugh a bit and he nods again. We both take a deep breath, taking out our weapons; my dual pistols/blades and his chainsaw shot gun. Zara on the other side with her partner, takes out her thunder staffs and her partner gets, a flute? Oh no... That's a holy instrument! I fangirled a bit inside from how cool that was! The siren sounds and our fight begins. Gunnar shoots the ground and picks up the bullets, "they won't explode put them in your ears and go for the flute girl." I nod and put them in my ears, one in each, and Gunnar and I charge for the girl with the flute. She started to play her flute but I couldn't hear it, good thing we got these plugs. She won't be able to put us to sleep. I've studied about the holy instruments, there are only four, and they are the flute, harp, violin, trumpet, and I guess singing counts, only a few have that talent, so I guess five holy instruments. The only thing I know about the flute is that it can put people to sleep and heal, like the other instruments, and it can paralyze. But hey you learn something new everyday. I felt something grab me by my ankle and hold me up. Oh no not again, this reminds me of the shadow demon, I look up to see what caught were vines! The girl was controlling them with her flute! Gunnar was caught too. Another vine has his gun and he's trying to reach for it. I struggle to get my sword to cut the vine but before I can, I feel a shock on my back. It was Zara, I scream in pain and my body starts to spaz out from the shock. The vine then drops me and I land on my arm, breaking it, I give another cry of pain and Gunnar struggles more, trying I get to his gun. Zara charges at him. Gunnar is one of the greatest Angels I know, just saying. He deserves to be at least top 10 this year because of his quick thinking right here. He pulls the bullets that were plugging his ears and in his hands, changes the functions and he throws one at Zara. Zara was caught off guard and she gets hit in the shoulder, in a place causing feeing in her arm to go numb and she drops one for her thunder sticks. She drops to the floor holding her arm. Gunnar uses the other bullet to shoot at the vine holding his gun. The vine explodes and Gunnar catches his gun, he shoots at the vine holding him causing it to let go. He falls and runs to my side. "You okay?!" I couldn't hear him, but I could read his lips and I nod, holding my arm. Zara runs to her partner. "K-Kristie, my arm." The girl kept her gaze straight ahead, and she held her flute up to play. Gunnar gasps and takes the bullets out of my ears. The girl with the flute, I'm guessing Kristie, starts to play the flute, then all of a sudden I feel a burst of energy and feeling in my arm again. It was a healers' song. I get up, "you're the smartest guy I know why do you hang out with me?" He chuckles and shrugs. We turn back to Zara and Kristie. Zara laughs, "You guys are good, just like the past few years. You know what? Since I'm in a good mood." She smiles and bows, and she pulls Kristie down with her. "Gunnar and Serena win!" Our eyes widen and we look at each other, the crowd beers and Gunnar and I hug each other tight. I look at Zara, "Are you sure it's okay?" Zara crosses her arms, "would you rather me change my mind and we can start up again?" Gunnar and I back up, shaking our heads vigorously, "Nonononononononono we're good." She laughs "Good!" We step off the ring and back to the training hall. A little pink haired angel tackle hugs me and I hug back laughing, "Gunnar did most of the work, he should be the one getting hugs." Rose smiles and tackle hugs Gunnar to the ground. He grunted as he landed and he laughed. Evangeline walks up, along with John, one of the first ranked Angels, and his partner. Rose and Gunnar get up and Evangeline smiles, "These are Rose's friends, Serena and Gunnar." John nods, "you got lucky with my girlfriend, I'm surprised she didn't pummel you both to the ground haha." Girlfriend?... "Hey babe!" Zara?! Zara and John are going out?! Maybe that's why she's so happy. She runs up and hugs him and she sees us. "Oh hey again haha." I smile and wave nervously. I didn't know how to react to this. John smiles, "everyone, since we're in this group now, I'd like to introduce my partner, Mark. He's a new angel wanting to see his rank, he's already really good! So make him feel at home! He literally smacks Mark's back and he laughs nervously. He then looks at me with a smile and I look away. I felt a blush on my cheeks from embarrassment, and I don't even know why. Then I look at Gunnar and his gaze on Mark was a worried one. "Hey... You okay?" I nudged him and he snaps out of it. He nods, "Yeah... I'm okay." I was concerned... Usually if Gunnar gets a bad feeling about something, a bad thing will happen later on. I hope it was just nothing. "Next up, John and Mark!" The announcer calls. Evangeline and Zara wish them luck as they head out to the ring, and I could've sworn... Before Mark turned, he smiled and winked at me... Oh boy.
