A woman was staring at a rose with a sad smile.
She stared at its delicate petals, admiring how beautifully it bloomed. Her gaze dragged downward, sinking into the cold earth beneath the blooms. For there hidden under that cruel blanket of beauty lay the grave of her world and buried right beside it, her own.
Roses continued to bloom above them bright and beautiful, unaware of the sorrow buried beneath their roots. Her lips curved into a faint smile, though the helplessness in her eyes remained.
A few paces away a silent observer shared her grief. The same haunting emptiness bled into his gaze, anchoring him to the spot because he knew with crushing certainty that she could never be his.
