Chapter 1: The Deal

I wasn't supposed to be here.
The moment I stepped into the building, I knew that much.
Everything about the place screamed money-polished marble floors, glass walls that reflected a version of me I barely recognized, and a silence so heavy it felt like even breathing cost something.
I tightened my grip on my bag.
This wasn't my world.
And people like me didn't belong in places like this.
"Miss Carter."
The voice cut through the silence.
Cold. Deep. Controlled.
I turned.
Adrian Blackwood stood across the room like he owned more than just the building. Like he owned everything.
Tall. Perfectly dressed. Every detail about him looked expensive-from the tailored black suit to the watch on his wrist that probably cost more than my rent for a year.
But it wasn't the money that made him dangerous.
It was his eyes.
Dark. Sharp. Empty.
Like nothing touched him.
"Sit."
Not a request.
I hesitated for half a second before walking toward him, trying to ignore the way my heart had started beating faster.
This was just a meeting.
Just a deal.
Nothing more.
I sat down.
The chair felt too soft. Too comfortable. Like it was trying to remind me I didn't belong.
"Do you know why you're here?" he asked.
I swallowed.
"Yes."
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
His gaze didn't move.
"Say it."
I clenched my fingers together, forcing myself to meet his eyes.
"You need a wife."
Silence.
A flicker of something crossed his face-amusement, maybe.
"A fake one," I added.
That seemed to satisfy him.
"So you do understand."
I nodded.
"And you need money."
There it was.
Simple. Direct. Brutal.
Like my entire life could be reduced to that one desperate truth.
I hated how accurate it was.
"How much?" I asked.
Straight to the point.
Something shifted in his expression.
Interest.
"Enough to solve all your problems," he said calmly.
That wasn't an answer.
That was a trap.
My chest tightened slightly, but I didn't look away.
"Terms," I said.
He stood up slowly.
Every movement controlled.
Measured.
Powerful.
He walked toward me, stopping just close enough to make my breath hitch.
"There are rules," he said.
I nodded.
"No feelings."
Easy.
"No attachment."
Still fine.
"And no matter what happens..."
He leaned slightly closer, his voice dropping just enough to send a chill down my spine.
"You do not fall in love with me."
For a second, I almost laughed.
Fall in love with him?
That wouldn't happen.
Not with a man who looked like he could destroy you without blinking.
"Fine," I said.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"Fine?" he repeated.
I lifted my chin.
"It's a deal."
There was a pause.
A long one.
Then slowly...
He smiled.
And it wasn't warm.
It wasn't kind.
It was the kind of smile that warned you it was already too late to turn back.
"Good," he said.
He reached for a document on the desk and slid it toward me.
"Sign."
I looked down at the paper.
A contract.
Pages and pages of terms.
Rules.
Conditions.
Everything about it screamed control.
I hesitated.
Just for a second.
Because something deep inside me was screaming that this was a bad idea.
That I should walk away.
That no amount of money was worth whatever this man was offering.
But then reality hit me again.
The bills.
The pressure.
The life I was trying to escape.
I picked up the pen.
"Once you sign," he said quietly, "there's no going back."
I glanced up at him.
His expression didn't change.
He meant it.
Every word.
I looked back at the contract.
And then-
I signed.
The moment the pen left the paper, something shifted.
Like a door closing.
Or maybe opening.
I wasn't sure which.
Adrian took the document, his eyes scanning my signature.
Satisfied.
"Welcome, Mrs. Blackwood."
The words hit differently.
Too real.
Too final.
I forced a small smile.
"This is still fake," I reminded him.
His gaze lifted slowly.
And for the first time...
Something dangerous flickered in his eyes.
"We'll see."
A chill ran down my spine.
And in that moment, I knew-
I hadn't just made a deal.
I had just made the biggest mistake of my life.

If you made it this far... tell me:
Would you sign the contract?
