Ignoring him, I got into Evelyn's car and we were on our way.

After showing our id's we entered the club which was in full swing. It was packed with people dancing, screaming, making out and some at the bar just watching the show. The loud music made me want to turn back to the exit because a club was never my scene, even before Evelyn had to drag me along with her with the excuse that I was supposed to be her wing-woman and help her hookup with random guys, but I decided to bear it again for this one night for her, so she would stop feeling bad about herself. She looked great in her gray dress with her hair open and out of the bun she usually wears.

Passing and excusing ourselves through the herd of people all squishing each other and staggering in their drunken escapades, Evelyn dragged me towards a booth on which I saw were all my close friends and colleagues gathered around, laughing and drinking beer.

They saw me and screamed in unison. "Happy twenty-fourth birthday Jade!"

I jumped and gasped in shock, putting my hand on my heart I stared at Evelyn. "You set me up."

She just shrugged and began clapping just as everybody started singing the birthday song. I blushed and hugged each one of them, thanking them. "This means so much. Thank you for remembering guys." I thought everyone at the office had forgotten because nobody wished me the entire morning. I was in a sour mood all day and when I came back home from work, I felt alone because this was my first birthday without Charlie. He was the one who always planned my parties and invited everyone over to our house. He never let me feel the loneliness and the absence of our parents. I even wanted to cancel my plans with Evelyn because I wasn't feeling up to it but then I thought, what the hell, I didn't want to disappoint her.

"Don't thank us, this was all Wells idea." Kenneth said as he kissed me on my cheek.

I looked at Evelyn gratefully.

"See, I am not as bad as you think." She smiled.

I hugged her. "I take back my words. You are definitely not a bitch."

We all laughed at that. "If she was, she wouldn't have invited me." Kenneth chuckled at the glare she gave him.

"I'll just bring us some cosmos." Evelyn told me and walked away towards the bar.

After two hours of constant dancing, screaming, cosmos and beer I was damn tired and ready to go home. My feet ached, my body was radiating heat and I felt a little suffocated due to the ever increasing crowd. I was about to get off the dance floor when Kenneth grabbed my hand and requested a dance from me. I unwillingly obliged.

"So how did you like the surprise?" he asked as he laced his arms around my waist while I put my hands on his shoulders. We began slow dancing even though the music was a fast one.

"It was...surprising." I answered dumbly.

He chuckled. "Really?" there was amusement in his voice and blue eyes.

I laughed at my own silliness.

"The surprising part for me was when Wells called me as an invitation to your party. I first thought she had dialed my number on accident. I was truly baffled."

"I can imagine."

"So..." he suddenly looked nervous. "I was thinking if you want to...I mean...go to dinner with me sometime?"

He was looking at me expectantly while I just gaped at him. We had stopped dancing now.

"Oh, I..." I didn't know how to respond. I never imagined that he felt this way about me. I just thought he considered me to be one of his friends. Kenny was handsome, no doubt, and I would have agreed to go out with him if I wasn't already losing my heart to the last person on earth I wanted to lose it to.
