You stumbled upon
my doorstep
again,
just like you
always did
when your parents
came home
from their
business trips
and took
all their
stress
out on
you.
It'd always
been an
unspoken promise
between us,
and though you
were never
great
at keeping
our promises,
I was,
starting from the beginning,
relentlessly throughout the middle,
and long after the end.
Every Wednesday,
I'd unlock my locks
and sneak you through
my darkened hallway
and into
my bedroom,
and we'd build
a fort
out of sheets,
pretending there were
no breathing souls
in the universe
other than ours.
But tonight,
you kissed me,
eyes closed,
like you always
used to do,
allowing me
the taste
of cheap liquor
lingering on
your lips
and suddenly
I'm afraid
I might've let you
enter something
way more
locked up
and secure
than my
door.
