PROLOUGE

"Breaking news: renowned neuroscientist Dr. Adrian Varro has announced his newest project, promising to bridge the gap between life and death. The experiment, codenamed 'DreamLink' seeks volunteer test subjects for a two-week sleep cycle... Each participant will receive ₱50,000 upon completion—"

Inside a cold, bright laboratory, eight sleeping pods were neatly arranged side by side. The air inside was heavy with the scent of different chemical— mix of medicine, alcohol, and metal. In the middle of the quiet room, stood a man in a white laboratory gown. His eyes fixed on the data flickering across the screen before him.

"Dalawa na lang po, Doc," his assistant says quietly.

He nods. "Good. Make sure their vitals stay stable once sedation starts."

He stares at the sleeping volunteers with thin silver wires attached to their heads, capturing every pulse and rhythm of their minds.

"If this succeeds..."

"Log entry #0017. Objective: simulate cognitive interaction with stored memory of deceased loved ones. Hypothesis: a shared dream network can retain emotional imprints after death. Expected result: closure... healing... hope."

"Risk..." A long pause from him follows "very low." as if, the experiment seems safe and that he doesn't expect any danger to the subjects.

Inside the system, the subjects' brainwaves glowed softly, floating in a pale blue light. They looked calm and peaceful, not knowing there was something strange happening around them.

Until, something changed.

The monitors started to spike. The machines made a sharp weird sounds. Data on the screens formed symbols no one could understand.

"Doc, the signal's changing-nag-o-overlap po!" the assistant shouted.

"That's impossible!" Varro snapped. "Keep the channel stable!"

But the graphs went crazy. The lines tangled together until everything on the screen suddenly stopped.

Then... silence filled the room.

Eight bodies lay still inside their pods.
Their minds had fallen deeper than any kind of sleep ever recorded. Behind their closed eyes, something moved like they were watching something no human had ever seen... and maybe never should.

"They're still alive. Brain activity remains consistent. But... where exactly did their consciousness go?"
