Inside an Introvert's Mind

Where is our place?
Where do we belong?
Even our friendship groups
May sometimes feel wrong

Not liking being the centre of attention
But still wanting to be noticed
Yet when we do finally speak
It can feel like we're being dismissed

You'll only understand
If you're the same way inclined
Being an introvert, sometimes
Can really wreck your mind

Forever conflicted in our heads
Between staying in and going out
Social occasions can take so much effort
When in our mind we always have doubts

Because it's hard meeting new people
Never sure exactly what to talk about
Preferring to listen on the side lines
Waiting for the courage to speak out loud

Finding it hard to express our feelings
We'd rather suffer in silence
Than burden anyone with our worries
As they always seem like an irrelevamce

Always creating uninvited questions
And solutions we really don't need
It's never advice that we're after
It's just a cry to be seen

But ultimately heard
Yet it's always mistaken
For the need to be fixed
Then we regret ever making a confession

Retreating back to our shell
From where we sit, watching and listening
Then people wonder why we rarely speak
If only they had paid attention from the very beginning

They would realise how their words and reactions
Can stop us from being honest
It's amazing how quickly
You once again feel like the dullest

Not brave or courageous
The world can be a scary place
Especially when you feel unwelcome
Because no one understands your introvert pace

They don't understand how you can't have an opinion
When really you're just scared
Of sounding stupid or too different
Knowing that no one really cares

At least that how it seems
When you're not used to all that noise
Extroverts can make it really difficult
When your trying to find your voice

"Tell me this, tell me that
Why do you never answer me back?
They might say
Not knowing how difficult it is to think on the spot like that

Because for them it's easy
There's always something to say
But they need to remember
Not all of us were built that way

Extroverts, if you're reading
Please try to understand
We're not trying to be dull, boring or even unattached
We just find it hard without some planning beforehand

We'll talk when we're ready
That's just how it has to be
So remember, to be kind and actually listen when we do
Because it's a struggle to have the courage to be seen

Don't tell us to speak up more
Why should we have to?
If you could lower your voice for a second
We just might be able to connect with you

So give us time
Give us space
And give us a moment
To find our place

Because once you understand
How to act and behave around us
You'll find we can be a lot of fun
And within a tight circle we'll find our braveness

To talk, to laugh
To let our light shine bright
But if you try to force anything
We will most certainly lose our light

That when the loneliness sets in
Because no one can see
That we're not broken or missing pieces
We just need some time to breath
