(Chapter 9) There Was Nothing You Could Do.

Start from the beginning

You pull your phone out of your pocket, seeing as you couldn't find anything else for your mind to be distracted with. You were grateful for technology and the infinite ways it kept your attention on more leisurely things rather than the dramatic story of your middle school life. Although not many things sounded appealing to indulge yourself in: social media, youtube, puzzle games-

Your phone suddenly blasted with a high pitched ring alert, a warning signed message lighting up on the top side of your screen. It was a villain alert, something that was very common to see nowadays especially being in a busier district. It was an alert system created by the Heroes Safety Commission to keep civilians alert and aware of certain villain attacks in the area and to avoid danger zones so heroes could do their job. However this one stuck out to you:

"WARNING! Villain spotted outside of Slipstream radio shop near Asakusa station. Quirk: Sludge. Can transform his body into a mud-like substance. Highly dangerous, avoid the area at all costs."

Something about the alert made your stomach drop. Slipstream was the shop down the corner of the arcade Bakugo and his friends always went to. They almost always went to that arcade...

You quickly click on your phone app, pressing on Bakugo's contact to try calling him. The call rang once, then twice, still no answer. You had a very bad feeling about all of this, even if you doubted he'd call you back if he was okay. Still, now was not the time for him to be ignoring your calls. He'd be fine right? Bakugo wouldn't get mixed up in something dangerous, and even if he did he's strong. He'll be alright...right?

You were trying to reassure yourself but it wasn't doing you much good. Something felt off about the whole situation, like a gut feeling in you knew something happened. Should you go to the scene? Should you try calling Bakugo again? Should you just leave it all alone?

Your whirlwind of worries didn't change the fact that your body began moving on its own, hoisting yourself off the bed and quickly running out of your bedroom. You were in such a focused state of panic you didn't even hear your mom call out to ask where you were going as you barged out the front door, running to the location the alert warned you to avoid. You just had to make sure he was okay, just make sure he was safe. You were sure you looked like a madman running so quickly down the sidewalks of your relaxed neighborhood, zooming past puzzled pedestrians, your lungs searing with the sudden intense cardio as your heart drummed in your chest. The arcade was about fifteen minutes walk from your house, maybe five if you kept running fast enough and managed to cross each crosswalk in time. Even then, what if the incident already happened? What if whatever villain this was already did too much damage? What if you were too late to find him if he really was in danger? Even then, what could you do?

You kept running, the questions and doubts piling up. The seconds felt like minutes, yet you found yourself already spotting the crowds of civilians gawking at what looked to be some sort of fire in an alleyway. Your fear spiked again, terrified you were too late. You pushed through the crowd, calling Bakugo loudly by his name, hoping he was just another person mindlessly watching the scene unfurl while heroes did their jobs, but then you got to the front of the crowd near the caution tape.

The fire you saw in the distance was now being washed down by pro hero Backdraft, a hero dressed in firefighter gear that uses his Water Pump quirk to extinguish fires, as other such heroes were cleaning up the mess. No sign of a villain...or Bakugo. News reporters were set up at the scene, relaying the "heroic" actions of the pro heroes who admirably fought the villain. You barely caught wind of what one reporter was portraying to her camera, explaining how the sudden appearance of the number one hero All Might saved the lives of two middle school students caught in the crossfire of the attack.
