When I finally grabbed the samurai sword, I drove it into his skull without hesitation. I kept screaming as I pushed the blade deeper, blood splattering across my face. But it still wasn't enough—he had to die... until he begged me to end it.
As I kept driving the blade in, memories from the past flooded my mind—the blood flowing from my father's hands, the screams. My sibling's cries from afar—all of it came rushing back.
"LILY!"
I heard Kiel's voice, and I immediately searched for him. Amid the smoke and chaos, memories of Sheng exploded in my mind—every moment, every smile, every final glance.
"Ate!"
I hadn't even saved him. I was a worthless sister.
"LILY!"
Snapped back to reality, I saw Kiel pinned to the ground—two zombies trying to bite him. Thankfully, he had a weapon to block their attacks. I quickly beheaded the two creatures, their blood spilling once again onto his body.
For the second time, I charged in to save him—pulled him up, and together we braced ourselves for the next wave of enemies.
Suddenly, two of our companions approached—but we knew they weren't the same. They weren't human anymore. As they charged to attack, a rain of bullets poured down from above, and Kiel and I instinctively dropped to the ground.
"Take them!"
I heard the voice of a man—a large foreigner holding a gun. His men immediately followed his command, pulling us up as we raised our hands. When one of them tried to take my samurai sword, I swiftly twisted my arm around him and drove the blade into his neck.
I heard the gasps and heavy breathing of the others, and they quickly promised never to touch my weapon again.
"Hurry up over there," I heard a woman's voice from the radio clipped to the shoulder of the commanding man. Her voice was clear, firm, but strangely warm—like she knew everything that was happening.
"Yes, MA'AM."
Upon hearing this, they ordered us to raise our hands. Kiel did so, but I didn't. They pointed their guns at me, yet I still refused. When they aimed at my companion, I had no choice but to raise my hands.
The radio crackled. Static. A moment of silence. Then the woman's voice returned—soft, deliberate.
"Alpha Unit, status?"
".Target neutralized. Two subjects detained."
Silence again. Until the woman spoke once more, slower, with a hint of curiosity:
"Bring them to Camp Dreadlight. I want to meet the one with the sword."
The leader's expression shifted. He hadn't expected that order—but he couldn't refuse.
"Copy that."
They confiscated some of our belongings. Kiel and I were bound with thick fabric—makeshift restraints, just tight enough to limit movement. As we stepped out of the building, I noticed the insignia on their shoulders: red, unfamiliar. Not military. A faction with its own rules, its own government in the chaos.
Their vehicle had no license plate. It was packed with gear—likely scavenged from other survivors. Every corner of the abandoned roads bore the scars of war: wrecked cars, scorched walls, scattered papers from institutions that no longer existed.
As the car moved, I felt the leader's gaze on me. Not hostile—curious. Like he was trying to piece together my story. Why wasn't I afraid? Why did I still have my samurai sword, untouched, resting beside me?
"You're not just another scavenger," he whispered.
I said nothing. It wasn't the time to explain. But one name echoed in my mind: Camp Dreadlight. Who was the woman on the radio? Why did she want to see me?

Camp Dreadlight—the name itself felt like a warning. Located in a former industrial zone near the sea, now barricaded and lit with flashing lights at night. No one approached it without trembling.
