Cold Heart (Part 1)

I suddenly heard her voice in my mind. It was soft, but bitter at the same time. It awoken my dying senses and made my eyes fly open under water.

"You wish for a way to survive?" She spoke in my head "You do not want to freeze to your core in this numbing water?"

I screamed in my head. "No! No! I don't want to die, not like this! Not now!" I didn't know if she could hear me but I said it anyway.

"This is what you deserve. This is the punishment that you will receive" She said curtly.

I wanted to shout at her, and ask what she meant by punishment, but that was not the first thing on my mind. What I needed more than anything was to breath again.

"Please, I'd do anything. Just help me!" I pleaded as my lungs, brain and heart filled with water.

"I can make you a deal, is that what you want, Blaze?" She asked me.

"Yes! Do it! I accept your deal." I said without hesitation.

It was after my quick response that I realized that she said my name. I haven't even had the chance to talk to her like a normal person would, let alone tell her my name. How does she know my name and why does she believe that I deserve punishment? Questions swim around in my head filled with water, drowning along with my body.

"I must warn you first. My deal must be kept, or else tortured death will await the one who does not comply with the terms."

"Just do it! Now! I accept!" I shout fervently.

The ear splitting sound of the ice breaking I heard moments ago, was now the most heavenly and wonderful sound I could ever have heard. The ice cracked once again and I started to punch at the surface as I did before. My hands breached the water first, followed by the rest of my body. I sucked in the most air that my drowning lungs could allow and then started to cough up ice-cold water. I felt the Girl wrap her arms around my torso and lifted me on to solid ground with no problem. I was shaking uncontrollably and couldn't catch my breath. My fingers were purple and I didn't have feeling in my body. The ironic blanket of snow didn't help what so ever as I tried to heat up.

Standing next to me was the Girl who didn't speak out loud yet, but she did sigh. Was she bored? Really? Well I'm sorry that my near death experience was so boring for you. She did seem impatient as she crossed her arms and looked down at me. Sorry that I'm taking too long to regenerate my body heat, I'll try to go faster.

Of course, I didn't actually say any of that to her. She did just save my life. On the other hand, its possible that she was the one who attempted to end my life just now. But, why go through the trouble of killing me, only to end up saving my life? This girl is more than a little mysterious.

Apparently she really couldn't wait for me to stop shaking it seemed, because she knelt down beside me and placed her hand on my chest. I suddenly felt warmth spread through my body starting at my heart and made it's way to my fingers and toes. I closed my eyes and put my hand on top of the Girl's hand. I sighed with delight and started to breath normally again. I stopped shaking and looked at the Girl with awe.

She had the same expression as always, one of boredom and bitterness. "Now, I must explain my deal, and you must obey the conditions." She spoke still in my mind. Her lips didn't move and her eyes didn't show any emotions.

I nodded my head hesitantly and stood up slowly. I spoke out loud because I cannot speak in other people's mind, I like to think it's because I'm human, unlike some girls I know.

"Yes, do explain the terms of our contract, so that I may fully comprehend our bond." I say with a grin, mimicking her formality.

She carried on. "I saved your life and therefore ignored the rules on your request. That being said, the only fitting compensation would be to take another life." She said with her silky voice.

I stood there, afraid to interrupt. My mind was trying to understand what she was saying, but I didn't like where the conversation was going.

"That is what you will do for me." She said. "You will not only take one innocent life, but three."

Hearing that, my jaw dropped open and I looked at her with shock and disbelief. "Why?" I shout. That last part makes no sense! If this girl is all about the 'rules and balance', then why make me kill three people instead of just one?

"Because it is your punishment for being cold -hearted and selfish."

"That doesn't make sense! I didn't do anything!" I scream in frustration, but by the look on her face, raising my voice isn't doing any good. "My life equals one other life, not three." I try to explain calmly but she is having none of it.

"That is my deal. If you do not comply, then come with me willingly to your painful end." The Girl states with zero emotion.

She is really beginning to anger me with the way she speaks and her insane demand. I wouldn't have accepted the deal if I had known that I would have to kill three people. However, I would never let her know that I want to back out of the deal, because that would be admitting to weakness and to tortured death.

"I will do it." I say with determination.

For the first time since meeting this girl, I see an emotion on her face, It is one of shock. She looks at me like I am a demon, a condemned soul who is cruel. Perhaps she looked at me like that, because that is what I am.

She loses her emotion quickly and goes back to a blank expression. "There is more. Your fate was to drown in this frigid cold water. Thus, you will take the lives of your three victims by drowning them in this very place."

My determination goes down a notch, and I look at the spot where I was pulled from the water. I close my eyes and swallow bile rising in my throat. I feel sick to my stomach at the though of killing three people and It is becoming all to real for me. I psych myself up for what must be done if I want to survive and nod my head. "Okay, I understand."

Once again, she looks at me like she can't believe that I'm going along with her deal. She eyes me with a acidic stare before continuing with her explanation. Good, I'm glad that she is surprised by my willingness. It makes me feel powerful that I'm surpassing her expectation. She must have thought that I would cheap out on the deal, but she had it wrong. I will fulfill her demands and stay alive.

"So, we have an understanding. The next three people who come across this river, you will drown. Regardless of who they are, you will not hesitate." She said more like a statement than a question.

I nod my head nervously. Now that I have heard all the conditions, it is clear that she wants me to fail. She offered an impossible deal that no one would dream of accepting. Her goal is to take my life once I fail. However, I will show her my strength, I will prove that my time is not over no matter the cost. The idea of killing three people is sickening, but I will not let her win. I will save myself from the horrible fate that she is trying so hard to make a reality.

She could surely see the determination in my eyes as she takes a step back from me and crosses her arms. "Very well, you have twenty four hours."
