"Bye, Rebecca! See you later!"

"Yeah! Bye!" I reply looking at my phone, not really paying attention to who said it.

I walk out of the school and start walking home. As usual, my mom tells me that she can't pick me up when it's too late to ask for a ride home from anyone else. I really should just find a designated ride for my extra art class after school, but every time I tell my mom that I have found myself a ride and that she doesn't have to worry about me, she puts on this stupid irresistible pout to make me feel guilty.

I turn onto the back path through a bunch of trees as a short cut.

Why should I feel guilty when she's the one that leaves me stranded all alone at school? Maybe she's trying to trick me into doing exercise! I cannot believe my own flesh and blood would...

My train of thought is forgotten when I hear footsteps behind me. Usually, no one is on this trail, and sadly, it kind of scares me that someone else uses this path at the same time as me. I'm glad that this path is short. It won't be long until I get back to the road. As a true horror movie geek, I know very well that being in an area that is the slightest bit dark could mean... well, the end.

I stop and pretend to tighten my shoe laces to listen behind me. The footsteps stop too.

Ok, this isn't good. Panic starts swelling through my chest. Crap, crap, crap. I can't run what if they're faster than me?

My brain is shutting down, but I force myself up, and keep walking. I don't have a plan so I'll just keep walking hoping that the person behind me doesn't attack. I want to look back but I can't for obvious reasons.

I finally get back to the street, and sigh with relief. At least there I can yell, and someone will hear me, right? Well, at least I'd like to think so. If worst comes to worst, I'll just have to sprint. I'm not that far away from my house, anymore. Furthermore, I also get to avoid the "the girl trips on a tree branch while running away from an axe murderer in the woods" cliché. I cringe and smile at the same time thinking about it.

I'm getting more nervous than scared. What happens if this guy follows me to my house? What if he tries to come inside? I'll have to lock the door really quickly so that they don't try to force their way in, but if I dig my key out now, he'll know that I know that he's following me, right? I personally don't know what he'll think; I've never followed or have been followed by someone before.

Ok, only 18 houses till I get to mine.

I get itchy everywhere. It happens every time I get nervous. I scratch my arm trying not to make it too obvious that I'm uncomfortable.
