September 7, 2006 – Hamburg, Germany
The glow from her birthday hadn’t worn off — not completely, at least. The tour break had given them all a moment to breathe. Isadora still had the scent of Tom’s cologne on her pillow, her heart still replaying the warmth of their shared night, the laughter, the kisses, the closeness that had grown even deeper.
But this morning… something didn’t feel right.
She sat in the bathroom, legs tucked up to her chest, phone in hand, scrolling through her calendar. Her brows furrowed.
“Wait…”
She double-checked. Then triple-checked.
The realization hit like cold water.
Her period was late. Not just by a couple days — weeks. She hadn’t even thought about it with everything going on. The birthdays, the travel, the shows… all the noise had muffled the quiet signs: exhaustion, soreness, mood swings, the occasional wave of nausea.
Now it was like the universe finally turned up the volume.
“Oh my god…” she whispered, palms cold against her cheeks.
She needed to talk to someone. Not Tom — not yet. Not until she knew for sure. Her fingers trembled as she typed out a message.

Ten Minutes Later – Back Patio
The sun had started slipping behind some clouds. Nina was already there, hoodie on, sipping a can of peach soda.
“You okay?” she asked the second she saw Isadora’s face.
Isadora didn’t answer at first. She dropped into the chair across from her, pulling her sleeves down over her knuckles. Her throat felt tight.
“I think…” she started, voice barely a whisper, “I think I might be pregnant.”
Nina’s soda can slipped a little in her hand. “Wait. What?”
Isadora nodded slowly, eyes flicking to the deck. “I haven’t had my period since July. I didn’t even notice — like, everything’s been so crazy. But I was doing my calendar this morning and I realized…”
Nina didn’t say anything for a second.
“You and Tom…” she began softly.
Isadora looked up with a faint nod. “Yeah. On his birthday… and then again on mine.”
“Oh wow.” Nina leaned back, blowing out a long breath. “Okay. Okay. Do you wanna go get a test?”
“I think I need to. I can’t just sit here not knowing.”
“We’ll go today. There’s that little pharmacy near the park. We can take the car and just say we’re grabbing lunch.”
Isadora’s eyes shimmered with unshed tears. “You’re not mad?”
“Dude. Of course not. I’m your best friend. Whatever happens, I’ve got you.”
They both sat there in the golden afternoon light, the world suddenly much heavier than it had been just days ago.
Seventeen. Just barely.
And now — maybe? — something else entirely.
