i tapped my pencil on my desk during class, trying to get my friend, bella's attention. but it just wouldn't work. i groaned silently, drooping my upper body over my desk. "look at me, you little shit..." i mumbled to myself.

"what did you just say, jade? anything you'd like to share to the class?" ms. flynn asked.

i quickly sat up and cleared my throat. "no'm." i replied, stiff as a board. bella was looking at me now, along with the rest of the class. she gave me a goofy smile before turning back around and me trying to tell her something.

i pushed my lower lip forward so i was pouting, then leaned forward onto my desk. i heard a small "psstt" behind me, causing myself to sit up slowly and turn around at the source. there sat a quiet boy who was known as luke hemmings. the tip of his fringe was just above his eye and he was biting his lower lip. he glanced down at his lap, causing me to look down.

there was a note in his hand under the desk, and he was slightly pushing his hand toward me, gesturing for me to take it. i reached for it quickly and snatched it. i glared at him and he jerked his head a little so it looked like he wanted me to pass it to the person in front of me. instead, i smirked evilly and unfolded it so it revealed his sloppy but readable handwriting:

will you go to the dance with me?

check yes _ or no _

-luke :)

my jaw dropped and i laughed silently, pointing at him. he frowned as i passed it to the girl in front of me, who was one of the most popular girls in school. it was obvious he had no chance. poor guy. luke nervously played with his thumbs and stared at the lesson, trying to distract himself from what his crush was about to check off.

she passed the note back and i looked at it right when it got sent back to me. a very large 'X' was crossed over the "no." how harsh. i glanced up at luke, who had worry in his eyes. i shook my head and handed it to him. with that, he snatched it back and eagerly unfolded it once again, then frowning  once he saw it. his eyes turned into this dark, depressing color that wasn't a fun light blue anymore. i pouted and took out a small piece of paper, writing a small note that read:

there's plenty of fish in the sea, but little did you know, you were dealing with a shark ;)

proud of that cheesy work of encouragement, i handed it to him. he took it and i could see him chuckle a little. he instantly turned the small paper over and wrote back:

i could be writing a note to one right now, how can i tell the difference?

i gave him a playful gasp and he grinned, along with a silent chuckle.

and thats how luke and i became best friends.
