(Y/N’s POV)
I could still feel the kiss on my lips.
Even as we walked back toward the others, firework residue sparkling behind us and the echo of Souya’s soft breathing still tangled in my thoughts.
We were holding hands.
Neither of us said anything about it—but neither of us let go either.
The group was where we left them—Mikey tossing an empty soda can, Emma and Hinata giggling by the stalls, Takemichi desperately trying to win her a stuffed panda, Draken supervising like a big older brother who’d seen too much.
“Oi! Took you long enough!” Smiley grinned wide. “What’d you do—make out behind the shrine or something?”
I froze.
Souya tensed beside me.
Emma gasped dramatically. “Wait, did you?!”
Hinata whipped around, squinting at us like a detective. “Something’s different…”
“We just watched fireworks,” I said, too fast, waving a hand. “No big deal.”
“Then what’s this?” Mikey said, pointing at our still-entwined fingers.
We both looked down like we’d only just realized we were still holding hands.
Souya started to pull away—but I squeezed.
Hard.
And he stopped.
Silence fell like a trap. Everyone stared. Waiting.
I looked at him.
He looked at me.
And then—
(Souya’s POV)
“Ain’t it obvious?”
My voice came out gruff. Annoyed.
But my ears…
My ears were on fire.
The group exploded.
“Oh my GOD!”
“FINALLY!”
“Took you idiots long enough!”
Smiley nearly fell over laughing, and Emma and Hinata were holding each other, squealing.
Red just died beside me—laughing, snorting, practically wheezing with how hard she was trying to stay upright.
I grumbled under my breath, tugging her along by the hand before they got any louder. “Let’s go.”
We weaved through the crowd again, back down quieter paths. My ears still burned, but I didn’t let go of her hand. I couldn’t. Not after that.
She giggled for the fiftieth time, wiping under her eyes. “I can’t believe you said ‘ain’t it obvious’ with that angry face and glowing ears. I’m never gonna recover.”
I stopped walking.
She bumped into me with a surprised “hm?”
And I kissed her.
Right there, between two lanterns, barely out of view.
It wasn’t like the kiss at the shrine—this one was quick, sharp, smug.
But when I pulled back, her breath hitched and her cheeks glowed.
I looked away fast, scowling at the sky.
“S-Serves you right,” I muttered.
She blinked.
Then laughed again.
“God, I love you,” she whispered like a secret.
I didn’t say it back—not yet.
But my fingers tightened around hers as we kept walking.
And I knew she could feel it.
