The hospital room was silent, except for the steady beeping of the heart monitor. Christian lay motionless on the bed, staring at the ceiling. His body ached, his soul felt hollow, and his heart—his already broken heart—felt as if it had been crushed into dust.
His baby was gone.
Not once, but twice.
He had lost the first one, and now the second—his unseen twin, the last piece of hope he didn't even know he had—was gone too.
The pain was unbearable.
It was a grief so deep that it numbed him. His tears had long dried, his voice had been stolen by his screams from earlier. Now, there was only silence.
The door creaked open, but Christian didn't bother looking.
It wasn't Damian.
Of course, it wasn't.
Instead, a man in a crisp black suit entered the room. Damian's secretary.
"Mr. Lorenz wanted me to check on you," the man said in a detached, business-like tone, as if Christian were nothing more than an inconvenience. "He's busy and cannot come."
Christian let out a hollow laugh, though there was no humor in it. Busy. Right.
His husband—no, his ex-husband in all but name—was too busy to visit the omega he had sworn to love and protect.
Too busy to grieve their child.
Too busy to even pretend to care.
The secretary placed a folder on the bedside table. "Mr. Lorenz instructed me to give you these. He has arranged for your hospital bills to be paid and has transferred a sum into your account as compensation."
Compensation?
Christian's blood ran cold.
That bastard.
He had lost his child, his body was still weak, his soul felt like it was barely holding on—and Damian thought money would fix it?
Christian slowly turned his head, his lifeless eyes locking onto the secretary. "Sabihin mo kay Damian..." His voice was quiet, but there was something terrifying in its emptiness.
The secretary stiffened. "Yes, sir?"
Christian's lips curved into a bitter, humorless smile.
"...Hindi ko kailangan ng pera niya."
The secretary hesitated, then gave a small nod. "I will relay the message."
Without another word, the man turned and left, the door clicking shut behind him.
