Umm hiii. So if anyone saw my notice on my THAB (To Hell and Back), I am still recovering from something in my life, but this is a short story I wrote when it was really bad. I have been told I am really good at putting my emotions into a story, so this is a really sad story and I'm sorry XD

TW: Little bit of swearing, REALLY SAD

Lizzie's POV

I woke up with a feeling of dread. I didn't know why. It was an odd feeling. I got up, sliding out of bed as quietly as I could, so as to not wake Joel. Everything seemed fine, nothing out of the ordinary, but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong. I told myself it was fine, but I needed to feel it. Carefully I climbed back into bed, pausing for a moment before rolling over to hug Joel, who had his back to me. He let out a soft grunt as I buried my face in his soft hair.

"Lizzie? What's wrong?" He asked, rolling over to wrap his arms around me. He pulled me into a comfortable position where I could bury my face in his chest like he knew I liked to do when something was wrong. Warmth flooded through me, along with the thought that this man really was my soulmate if he could tell something is wrong by just a hug. I felt better in his arms, protected in his warm grip.

"I don't know. I went all around the house and nothing seems wrong, I just have a bad feeling," I mumbled into his shirt. I didn't need to say anything else. Joel pulled me closer still, leaned down slightly to give me a small kiss on my forehead, and let me cling to him, not worrying about time. I knew we had promised Scott that we would be over to his house for lunch, and that it was already 10:30, but I didn't care. I knew something was wrong, but to be honest, as long as I had Joel, nothing could ever truly be wrong. Looking back now, I wish we had just stayed like that.

Eventually, I smiled, feeling better, and pulled Joel into a kiss, communicating with him without words, 'Thank you, I feel better' and 'I love you' and so much more. I could feel him smile, not the goofy one that he wore around other people. This one was a true smile, and it was just for me.

We got up and ate a light breakfast, knowing we would be eating lunch soon. I took Meri out for a walk, which she was delighted by. The feeling that something was wrong never went away, but every time it got bad, all I had to do was remember Joel's face, and I instantly felt like everything was going to be fine. At 11:45, me and Joel said bye to Meri and Buddy and got into the car, Joel driving.

Scott used to live across the street from us, but after he moved in with his boyfriend, his house was about 5 minutes away. My heart started to pound as Joel started to drive. I pushed it away, reaching for Joel's head on the center console, interlocking our fingers. I could see him smile his wonderful smile out of the corner of my eye.

We were 2 minutes away from Scott's house when it happened. It felt like it happened so fast, but the time slowed down. I remember every detail. A grey car speeding toward us on the other side of the road. The driver's eyes, sliding closed. The car drifted into our lane. I clocked it, but I froze. Joel saw it was well. Joel's brain worked way faster than mine. And apparently, his mind was on me.

His voice still haunts me. A single word. Him realizing there was no way we weren't going to crash. Him clicking his seat belt off of him, throwing it aside. His scream, desperate, panicked, scared, but so full of love and sorrow. One word. "LIZZIE!" I don't know how he did it. All I knew was suddenly, he was on top of me, his body shielding mine. Me still too stunned to do anything. The time really did slow down. 5 heartbeats. I counted.

Then, I heard a giant noise, felt a crushing impact, smelled smoke, and I could have sworn I heard Joel whisper, "I love you," then, everything went black.

When I came too, I was on the ground. Not much time had passed, I could tell. I could feel pavement below me, cuts and bruises around my body, and a pretty big pain on my left shoulder, but all I could think was, Joel. I was shaking as I sat up. People were all around, some on their phones, hopefully calling 999, some just watching, and some, gathered around something. From the group gathered around something, a familiar face emerged.

"Lizzie!" Scott cried, running toward me. Tears were streaming down his face. It was the first time I had ever seen him cry.

"S-Scott...?" I asked, my voice shaky. "Wh-wh-where's Joel?" It was the only thing I thought to say.

Scott pulled me into a hug. I collapsed against him. Then, my brain connected to dots.

"No..." I whispered, pushing away from Scott and standing up, limping as I walked to the group of people. They parted as I approached.

My soul left my body as I saw him. He was covered in blood, most of his limbs twisted the wrong way. His perfect face still the most beautiful thing I have and would ever see. His chest, still and lifeless.

I dropped beside my husband. Tears rolled down my face as I refused to believe it was true. I shook him gently. "Joel? Hey, babe, funny, you're such a comedian, get your ass up. Please, please please please please." I pressed my head to his chest. I couldn't feel his heart beating like it should be. What I could feel, was his warmth fading.

"No, no, no, no, no, NO. JOEL, PLEASE," I pleaded, my voice breaking, my vision going blurry with tears. I was deftly aware of the other people around me, of Scott turning to bury his face in his boyfriend's arms. I didn't care. Nothing mattered anymore. He was the whole reason for anything, now that he's gone, nothing matters. I let out the loudest, most heart-wrenching scream I had ever heard, letting the tears run down my face.

"Joel, please... you can't leave me. I won't let you. I will march down to hell and drag your ass out. I don't care. Joel, don't you dare leave me," I pleaded more, crying as I did, even though I already knew logically there was no hope.

I learned to trust my gut after that day. It would have saved him. It may save someone else someday. But it was still so hard. I wanted to sell my house because everything reminded me of him, but the thought of moving away from all the memories I had with him in those rooms, made me sick to my stomach all over again.

I was never the same after that.
