Hawk and Wolf maintained their silent surveillance, their chakra cloaks effectively concealing their presence as they followed the peculiar movements of Hyuga Neji. The sight of the stoic prodigy stumbling and his subsequent purchase of multiple volumes of "Icha Icha Paradise" had been a source of much internal amusement, though their training ensured their expressions remained neutral.

"Did you see the way he was walking?" Wolf signed, his hand movements fluid and expressive. "Like a newborn deer on ice."

Hawk nodded in agreement. "Uncharacteristic. His movements are usually precise, almost... mechanical. This... is different."

They continued to track Neji until he was well within the Hyuga compound. Once they were certain he had settled, they silently retreated towards their designated meeting point within the Anbu headquarters – a dimly lit, secure room where they could discuss their observations.

Upon entering the room, they found Kakashi already present, leaning against a wall as he often did, his usual detached air about him. He had clearly been informed of their findings, or at least had his own suspicions.

"Report," Kakashi stated simply, his single eye fixed on them.

Hawk stepped forward and began to relay their observations, his hand signs precise and detailed. "Subject Hyuga Neji was observed exhibiting unusual physical coordination. Movements were... erratic. He stumbled several times."

"Erratic?" Kakashi echoed, his eyebrow raised slightly. "Indeed. I observed a similar... lack of grace earlier." He had witnessed Neji's awkwardness firsthand.

Wolf chimed in, signing, "He also made a purchase at the Leaf Bookstore." He then mimicked holding a stack of books, a hint of a smirk visible beneath his mask. "Multiple volumes of... 'Icha Icha Paradise'."

Kakashi nodded, a knowing look in his single eye. "Ah, yes. I had the pleasure of witnessing that peculiar acquisition myself." He couldn't help but find the image of Neji engrossed in such literature rather amusing.

"Did he interact with anyone?" Kakashi inquired.

Hawk shook his head. "No direct interactions. He seemed... preoccupied with his own thoughts."

"Did he seem aware of our presence?" Kakashi pressed.

Wolf hesitated for a moment before signing, "Unclear. He did not react overtly, but his gaze seemed to... sweep the surroundings more frequently than usual. It is possible he sensed something."

Kakashi stroked his chin thoughtfully, a gesture that was more habitual than indicative of deep contemplation. "Unusual movements, a sudden interest in... that particular literature... and a potential awareness of surveillance. It's all rather... curious."

"The Hokage's orders were to monitor," Hawk signed, his tone neutral. "We have done so. We have also prepared a detailed report for the Third Hokage."

Kakashi nodded. "Good. I will be interested to hear his assessment. This is unlike any Hyuga I've encountered before, and certainly not the Neji Hyuga we know."

Later that day, the two Anbu operatives presented their report to the Third Hokage in his office. They detailed Neji's erratic movements, his purchase of the suggestive literature, and their observations regarding his potential awareness of their surveillance.

Sarutobi listened intently, his expression thoughtful. He stroked his beard, his gaze distant as he considered the information. "The circumstances surrounding his... incapacitation remain unclear," he mused aloud. "And now this. A sudden change in behavior from a shinobi known for his discipline and control."

"We found no indication of any external threat during our observation, Hokage-sama," Hawk reported. "However, the subject's demeanor remains... inconsistent with his established profile."

"Indeed," Sarutobi sighed. "Keep a close watch on him. Maintain your surveillance, but do not make your presence known unless absolutely necessary. We need to understand what has transpired with Neji Hyuga." He looked at the two Anbu, his gaze firm. "This situation warrants our utmost attention."

The Anbu operatives bowed respectfully and departed, leaving the Third Hokage alone with his thoughts. The mystery of Neji Hyuga had deepened, and the village's leader knew that this was a matter that required careful and discreet investigation.
