Yet she had never heard him or seen him study. He looked well rested, and he moved through school with an effortlessness that she could only dream of.
His position as top of their class wasn't something he had to fight for, rather just something that happened.
I guess that's the sort of thing you can expect from someone whose family is naturally academically talented.
Huang Renjun comes from a family of surgeons and scientists. Why they chose to locate themselves in Oakhill never ceases to confuse her. From what she knew, his father was a lead researcher in the neighbouring towns oncology department.
But yet here he was, in Oakhill, all naturally talented and awfully annoying.
Yujin tapped her pencil against her notebook, jaw clenching as she remained lost in thought.
A thunk next to her drew her out of thought and she turned to look at Renjun who was next to her.
Renjun had set his pencil down, pushing his notebook to the edge of his desk and stretching. He cracked his knuckles and rolled his neck before turning lazily to her. "You're overthinking number six," he said, his tone annoyingly casual.
"Quadratic formula works best."
Yujin stiffened, her eyes glancing from the boy to her page where she noticed her pencil had left nothing but a deep dark dot from where she had been pushing it into the page.
She hadn't even realised she was still working on it.
Her jaw clenched, refusing to look at him as she read through the question again. "I wasn't overthinking."
"Whatever you say," he said, utterly bored as he grabbed his book and began reading from it.
Her thumb came up to her lips as she began to pull at the skin around them. She wanted to say he was wrong, that she knew how to do it without using quadratic formula, but a quick glance to his paper proved that he was right.
She hated him.
Or at least, she tried to convince herself that she did.
She knew that she hated the fact that he was always right, however.
Scribbling down the answers to the rest of her questions, she sighed and closed her book just as the bell rang, signalling the end of class.
The quiet classroom turned into a frenzy as chairs scraped the floor and shoes squeaked as students hurriedly exited the room.
Shoving her books into her bag, Yujin stood up quickly, making an effort to leave the classroom quickly so she could get to science before him. She really wasn't in the mood to deal with his smugness any longer than necessary.
Exiting the room, Yujin braced herself as she entered the stream of students flooding the hallway. The hall was a chaotic mess of voices and movement, but she kept her head high as she manoeuvered through the crowd, diligently dodging elbows and feet as she turned the corner towards the science building.
"Yujin," that all too familiar voice fell to her ears and she didn't have to look up to know who was now next to her.
"Renjun," she said, her voice completely monotonous as she weaved through the body of students- still refusing to look at him.
He sighed. "I hope you're not mad about the quadratic formula thing."
"I don't get mad," she said, keeping her eyes forward.
