Chapter 18: The Candidates

He kept punching the sandbag as he thought about his time serving in World War II against Hydra and Red Skull. The battles. His sacrifice. Peggy Carter. And when the scientists were amazed that he was still alive when they got him out of the ice.

Steve punched the sandbag so hard that it was sent flying and the sand was spilling out. He had 6 more sandbags lined up as he grabbed the next one and hanged it up as he continued his exercise.

Fury: trouble sleeping?

Steve: I slept for 70 years, sir. I think I've had my fill.

Fury: then you should be out, celebrating, seeing the world.

Steve: <stops and starts taking off the bandages> when I went under, the world was at war. I wake up, they say we won. They didn't say what we lost.

Fury: we've made some mistakes along the way. Some, very recently.

Steve: are you here with a mission, sir?

Fury; I am.

Steve: trying to get me back in the world?

Fury: <holds out a folder to him> trying to save it.

Steve: <grabs the file and sees the picture of the Tesseract> Hydra's secret weapon.

Fury; Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean when he was looking for you. He thought what we think. The Tesseract could be the key to unlimited sustainable energy. That's something the world sorely needs.

Steve: <closes the file and gives it back> who took it from you?

Fury: they're called Loki and Amora. They're not from around here. There's a lot we'll have to bring you up to speed on if you're in. The world has gotten even stranger than you already know.

Steve: At this point, I doubt anything would surprise me.

Fury: ten bucks says you're wrong.

Steve grabs his bag and a sandbag and starts walking out.

Fury; there's a debriefing packet waiting for you back at your apartment. Is there anything you can tell us about the Tesseract that we ought to know now?

Steve: you should have left it in the ocean.

River

Tony was in his Iron Man armor cutting the pipe of an energy line as he placed an arc reactor on it that latched itself to the line. Tony flew out of the water and started flying towards inner Manhattan.

Tony; good to go on this end. The rest is up to you.

Pepper: <call> you disconnected the transmission lines? Are we off the grid?

Tony; Stark Tower is about to become a beacon of self-sustaining clean energy.

Pepper: <call> well, assuming the arc reactor takes over and it actually works.

Tony; I assume. Wade helped, don't doubt his calculations. Light her up.

Tony flew towards Grand Central Station as above it was Stark Tower as it lighted up and the word "Stark" lighted up the most on it.

Pepper: <call> how does it look?

Tony; like Christmas, but with more me.

Pepper: <call> we've got to go wider on the public awareness campaign. You need to do some press as you know Wade won't do it at all. I'm in DC tomorrow, I'm working on the zoning for the next three buildings.
