Chapter 4 - Thought the Maze was Safer

I couldn't help but laugh, and quickly stopped myself, "Alright," I replied, smiling, "Now let's go wake that Greenie."

The three of us had been working hard with the gardening Zart had assigned us to, and unlike Newt, I think that gardening is pretty fun, just a lot of hard work and time consuming. I wiped some sweat off of my forehead from the heat of this morning.

"Have you guys ever tried climbing over the top of the Maze?" Thomas suddenly asked us.

I nodded, knowing that Newt was probably tired of answering Thomas's questions about the Maze. "Yeah, we've already tried that." I replied, and continued hacking at the ground with my hoe. "The ivy doesn't go all the way to the top."

"And besides, where would we go from there?" added Newt, as he picked some of the ripened grapes off from the vines.

Thomas shrugged and continued with his gardening then looked up again, "What about the box?" he began, "Like when it comes up agai-"

"No, we tried that," said Newt, cutting Thomas off. "The box won't go back down with someone in it."

Thomas looked back down but his head came up faster than it had gone down, "Have you ever tri-"

"We've tried it, alright... twice," said Newt, his voice rising in pitch with annoyance. "Alright, just trust me. Anything that you think of, we've already tried it." He said, "The only way out of here is the Maze."

I paused my gardening and looked up at Newt, knowing he wasn't in a good mood.

He didn't look at me and kept his eyes on Thomas who seemed lost for words, "If you really want to make yourself useful, then go dig us up some more fertilizer from the woods." Newt told him, handing him a basket.

I watched as Thomas shrugged and began walking to the woods. I turned back to Newt, whose eyes locked onto mine. He sighed, "I was a bit harsh, wasn't I?"

I nodded, "Yeah, you were." I said.

Newt shook his head, "Why can't he just understand that some of us have been here much longer than he has and that we've tried everything, and I mean everything to get out of here." he said, beginning to pick grapes again.

"He just has to get used to this place," I said, "We all had questions when we first arrived."

Newt sighed, "Yeah, guess you're right." he said, then I got back to farming.

We both continued doing our work as the sun constantly beat on our skin, making me sweat even more. "It's hot out today," I commented, as I wiped another drip of sweat off from my face.

Newt nodded, "It is hot today," he said, placing a handful of grapes into his basket.

I was about to say something else when I suddenly heard someone screaming for help. Newt, Zart, and the other Gladers heard it too and we all stopped and looked around to see what was going on. Suddenly, Thomas comes darting out of the woods with Ben chasing him not too far away.

Thomas continued screaming for help then was cut off as Ben tackled him to the ground and started to choke him. We all began running to the scene and I brought my hoe with me, and once I arrived, I used it to smack Ben in the head to stop him from trying to hurt Thomas.

Ben suddenly rolled off of Thomas and onto his back. Newt, Gally, and Fry rushed over to Ben and pinned him to the ground. "Calm down, Ben," said Gally, as he pinned him.

Although Ben tried to get free, he could break away from the three of them pinning him, "What the hell just happened?" asked Fry, baffled at the sudden turn of events.

Thomas was helped up off the ground by the other boys and quickly replied in ragged breaths, "He just attacked me!" he exclaimed, horror in his eyes.

We all looked at each other, shocked that Ben would pull something like that then I suddenly thought of the worse explanation.

Ably pushed through the crowd of Gladers to get to Ben, who was still trying to break free and had some blood rolling down the side of his face from when I had hit him. Alby looked at Ben for some time and realized exactly what was going on. "Lift his shirt," he said, then Ben began to protest, saying that he was fine.

Once Gally, Newt, and Fry lifted his shirt, our worst beliefs became true. Ben had a large Griever wound which had begun spreading all over his body.

Alby looked at the wound for some time until he finally decided the best course of action. "Put him in the Slammer for now." he said, then the three boys holding him down looked at each other then began lifting Ben up.

He began to protest again, "No! Alby, please!"

Newt looked up, "Med-Jack!" he called, and soon after, Clint came walking over and helped the three of them lift Ben up.

Ben continued protesting and squirming in their arms and I knew they wouldn't get all the way to the Slammer with just the four of them. So I walked over and helped lift him as we began taking him to the Slammer.

Ben never stopped once the whole time–Once we got to the Slammer, we threw him inside and shut the door behind him. Then Gally quickly tied the door shut before Ben rushed over and began shaking them.

Ben looked at the five of us, "Please! Help me!" He yelled, scanning us until his eyes locked on Gally. "Gally, please!" he cried, but all Gally did was walk away without saying anything and we all did the same, not wanting to see Ben in such a state. "Clint? Y/N? Fry? Newt?"

None of us wanted to turn back and just kept walking away as his cries continued for us to help him, that he had made a mistake. But we all knew that his pleas would do nothing because he was already going through the changing, and no one can come back from that.
