The other boys laughed as they watched the new Greenie dart from the box. Despite his fear, I couldn't help but smile at his frantic attempts to escape from us.
I glanced over at Newt, who stood beside me with a similar expression on his face. The scene before us brought me back memories of my arrival here. It's hard to believe that about three years have passed since then, and now I find myself in this situation. No longer the mute newcomer from the box, I am now a member of a group of boys fighting to survive a treacherous maze. It may sound strange, but after all this time, I have managed to make this place my home.
There were a few "ouch" and "oof" comments among the boy's laughs as we all watched the Greenie who had gone from running to face planting in the dirt. I couldn't help but start laughing along at the scene before me. It wasn't every month we'd have a Greenie do something bizarre when they first arrived.
We still all watched from afar as the Greenie got up and began to look around, now seeing the walls around the Glade. As the boy continued to look around, Alby walked up behind Newt and whispered something into his ear. Newt relaxed himself from laughing, although a smile still on his face, and began walking off as Alby and a few other Gladers approached the Greenie.
I pushed myself through the crowd of boys to reach Newt before he got too far away, "What was that all about?" I asked him, as we walked in the grassy field of the Glade.
Newt shrugged, "Alby wants to put the Greenie in the Slammer." he began, "Doesn't want the newbie suddenly running off into the Maze.
I nodded thoughtfully, understanding Alby, a close friend of mine's thoughts. "Yeah," I said, "Can't imagine what would happen to him if he just ran into there."
Newt sighed, his smile fading slightly, "Yeah," he said, then added in a quieter voice, "Don't we all."
I felt a pang of sadness as I observed Newt recalling the terrible events of his last venture into the Maze. The memory of witnessing George's tragic death and narrowly escaping himself had left a lasting impact on him. As a result, he now walks with a limp in his right leg.
I smiled, hoping to cheer him up, "Wonder what the Greenie's name is." I said.
Newt sighed, a small grin spreading across his face, "Yeah," he began, "Better not be Gally."
I laughed, "That'd be so confusing yet draining." I said, shaking my head, "Two Gallys."
Even though I consider Gally and the other boys as my brothers, we all can admit that Gally tends to have a short fuse and can be a bit too controlling at times.
We finally reached the Slammer and Newt opened one of the cells, then walked inside to make sure it was alright for someone to go in there. There have been times when the Slammers have had some weird and random things laying inside like animal poop. They even get filled with water after it rains.
I held the door to the Slammer so that it didn't shut down on Newt as he examined its interior. After he examined it for a few seconds, he hopped back out of it and nodded. "It's all clean and ready to go for our new Greenie." he said, and as I was about to make a comment, I heard someone approach behind us.
We both turned around at the noise and witnessed Alby, accompanied by a few other Gladers, holding the Greenie firmly in their grasp. Despite his resistance, they proceeded to escort him past us and into the Slammer, where they promptly locked the door behind him. Then the Greenie just curled up in the corner of the cell.
I felt bad for the Greenie but knew that this was a better place for him than out in the Maze; I could tell that Newt felt the same way.
Alby walked back to Newt and I, "He's a feisty Greenie," he simply said, as he approached.
Newt nodded, "Yeah," he said, "He definitely has some fire to him."
Alby took a glance back at the Slammer, "I'm gonna go talk to him quick," he said, "Just want him to feel comfortable here, not scared."
I nodded, "Yeah. Better get him calmed down."
"Yes, and before he does anything else rational." said Alby, then he walked back to the Slammer where the Greenie sat huddled.
Newt turned to me, "I can't believe it's only early afternoon," He commented as he glanced up at the sun's position in the sky.
I nodded, "I can't believe that it's already time to get back to our chores again. And I've got to go and help Chuck with cleaning up the Glade." I said, then remarked, "I swear that kid is a living sweeper."
He chuckled, "Yeah, I've seen him go at it."
I grinned, "I love Chuck but sometimes he gets a little too carried away with his job. I'll probably spend half the time trying to keep up with him." I said, "Anyways, what's on your to-do list?"
Newt sighed, "Got to give Zart a hand with the gardening. Seems a few of the other green-thumbed Shanks are busy helping Winston hack up that new cow we got a while back."
I nodded, "Makes sense," I said, "That thing was a giant the last time I saw it."
He smirked, "Yeah, and you know how Zart gets when he's left alone. I'm going to do lots of hard gardening and 'watching the plants grow'."
"I can just picture it." I said, giggling. "You standing there, trying to make small talk with the tomatoes. 'So, how's life in the dirt?'"
He laughed, "Exactly!"
"Oh man, the plants would probably just ignore you." I said.
Newt nodded, smiling, "True that."
I looked around at the other Gladers doing their chores, "Better get going now before it gets too late." I said, then grinned, "And you keep an eye on those tomatoes, Newt."
"I will," he said, "And try to keep up with that cleaning whirlwind."
I chuckled, "I'll keep up, and talking about Chuck, he's probably been waiting for me."
He nodded, "Probably," he said, then grinned, "Just another afternoon in the Glade."
"Yup! Just another day of work." I said, smiling. "See you later!"
"See ya', Y/N!" he said, then we parted in our own separate directions.
