Jake and I talked about it often, planning what we would wear and how we would make the night unforgettable. Everything seemed perfect, almost too perfect.
One day, while scrolling through Instagram, I noticed a few odd comments on Jake's photos. A girl named Kate, who I vaguely recognized from a few classes, had been leaving heart emojis and flirty remarks. I brushed it off at first, telling myself that Jake was with me, and I had nothing to worry about.
I decided to talk to Rose and Michelle about it. We met in a cafe near my house, and I confided in them about my concerns. "Do you think I'm being paranoid?" I asked, feeling a little silly for even bringing it up.
Rose frowned, thinking. "I don't know, Lily. It could be nothing, but if it's bothering you, maybe you should talk to Jake about it. It's better to clear the air." Michelle nodded.
At first, I also thought about it, but then, for some reason, I became afraid of the answer.
What if he doesn't like me anymore? What if he's lost interest because of my body? Maybe I should have let him kiss me. What if he's starting to find me annoying?
"Lily! Lily! LILYY SPEAR! Back to earth!" Michelle's voice broke through my spiraling thoughts as she shook my shoulder, her face etched with concern.
I blinked and looked around, realizing I had zoned out completely. Rose and Michelle were both watching me closely, with concern.
I shook my head, trying to clear the doubts and fears clouding my mind. "I guess I'm just overthinking it, guys. Jake hasn't shown any red flag behavior, right?"
Michelle raised an eyebrow. "No, he hasn't. He's been nothing but sweet to you."
Rose nodded in agreement. "Yeah, from what you've told us, he seems really into you. Don't let your insecurities sabotage something good."
I sighed, feeling a bit more reassured but still slightly uneasy. "I know, I know. It's just... I've never felt this way before, and it scares me. What if he suddenly realizes I'm not good enough?"
Rose put a comforting hand on my shoulder. "Lily, you are good enough. Anyone would be lucky to have you. And Jake? He clearly sees how amazing you are. Trust in that."
Michelle chimed in with her usual confidence. "And if he doesn't, then he's an idiot, and you deserve better. But from what I've seen, he's definitely not an idiot."
I managed a small smile, feeling the warmth of their support. "Thanks, guys. I just need to stop overthinking and trust in what we have."
Michelle grinned. "Exactly. Now, let's focus on the spring dance. We need to find the perfect dress for you!"
Rose's eyes lit up. "Yes! Shopping spree!"
I laughed seeing there excitement and for a while, I did trusted the process. But the nagging feeling in the back of my mind wouldn't go away.
A few days later, I was heading to the library when I overheard a conversation that stopped me in my tracks. Hidden behind a bookshelf, I recognized Kate's voice, laughing and talking with someone. Peeking through the gap between the books, my heart dropped when I saw her with Jake. They were sitting close together, and Jake had his arm around her shoulders, giving butterfly kisses on her neck.
"I can't wait for the dance," Kate said, looking up at him with adoration. "It's going to be perfect."
Jake smiled at her, the same smile he used to give me. "Yeah, it will be. I'm glad we're going together."
I felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. My heart pounded in my chest as I stumbled away, not wanting to hear any more. How could he do this to me? After everything we had shared, everything we had been through?
