The morning comes in fast.
I haven't got much sleep last night, probably 3 hours this past week. I get up and the first thing I check is if I've got any emails. Nothing. I make the bed and go towards the bathroom, brush my teeth, wash and dry my hair before heading downstairs to have breakfast.
My mom has her back to me, but she can tell I've arrived when she asks "Anything yet?"
"Nothing, and I assume that by you asking, we haven't got a letter yet"
She turns to me and gives me an appologetically look, I look down in shame and she places cookies in the counter.
"Maybe I'm not good enough" I say it barely as a whisper.
"Yes, you are" She says confidently "This whole cruise school thing was gonna keep us apart anyway" she turns her back again and pours orange juice on the cups "Who even allows only one scholarship per year anyway? psychos.."
I giggle and grab the cup from the counter "They're rich psychos mom, and It's not too late, let's just...not think about it and if it doesn't come, it won't matter"
We eat the breakfast, talking about our plans for the day, I was almost late so I rushed getting ready and went to school.
As I'm walking, I look around this town, It's small, I wonder if It's even allowed to be considered a small town, it's even smaller than that, not in terms of land, but of people, there's 10 of them in my school, that has looked the same for 3 generations. This place is made of nature, animals, it's placed in a big mountain, the type of mountain that camping trip lovers don't even have the patience to hike to. Don't get me wrong, I love living here, everywhere I look I know it's beautiful, the wind brushes the trees beautifully, the caskate at the high end of this town waters the plants, It's beautiful and magical. The down part though, people. People my age. You'd think that by only having 10 kids you'd be friends, close. That's not the case for me, I always felt left out, even while I had the best grades no one ever asked me for help, or to be my friend. I feel frustrated, or did. Last year my best friend, Elly moved here and we immediatly got close, she lives next to me and we usually go to school together, well, not unless one of us is late, which is why I'm currently entering the school alone.
"Where have you been?" Elly asks "It's the last day and you're late? I hope it was because you were celebrating!" She gives me a hopeful smile and shakes me a little, when she notices my dissapointed face, regret washes over her face "Hey, you've still got tomorrow, and if not, you've still got me, we've got this" She says, determined.
"Sure" I mumble as we enter class.
The teacher starts talking, but I'm not listening, I spend the whole time listing in my notebook other colleges I wouldn't mind going, maybe doing a semester in a cruise is stupid, maybe I'd be bullied by the rich kids. I make all types of excuses because even though I know I still have tomorrow, I'm not sure if this hope is only a temporary solution that'll end tomorrow when the day ends and I'll sleep oficially knowing that I didn't get in.
I spend the whole day being a menace to everyone, more than usual. Elly spent the entire time reassuring me or giving me a hopeful smile, I know deep down she was a little worried for me, I mean, I'm worried about myself too, I'm nervous and silent and don't even know if I got in.
The walk home is also silent, Elly has given up on talking because she knows I'm too stressed to keep up with a conversation. My house is the first stop, which makes it so that I can give Elly one last hug, she gives me a soft goodbye and I leave.
My mom isn't home, so I decide to make some bread from scratch, I put some of the ingredients down but my mind immediatly goes to school. I try to shake the thoughts out of my head but I can't.
"Damnit, get out of my head" I'm getting so crazy that I've started to speak to myself. Maybe I should take a look at the animals. Unfortunately they can't answer, but I know they listen, which is enough for me.
As I'm walking out, I bump into someone at the door, It's a guy a little older than me, he's panting heavily, which means he's not from here.
"Emily Barlowe?"
"Yes?"
"I believe this letter is for you"

A.N: Hi guys, thank you so much for reading! First chapters are always hard to write. And I tried my best. Feel free to make suggestions. Plus I wanted to add that English is not my first language, so if I make any spelling mistakes feel free to let me know, and if you don't feel comfortable reading a story with possible spelling errors that's okay too! Thank you again! <33
