HERO POV
'I tossed my keys down and flicked the lights on, allowing myself to finally indulge in the yawn I'd been suppressing all day.
"Long day?" Rippled a voice from the darkness.
I whirled to face the sofas, my hand already at the gun on my hip. His eyes were unfocused and he was more slumped than sitting. The man who always got the last word, who always issued the last threat. The man who could disappear at a moments notice and never get caught unless he wanted to be.
And here he was. Drunk. On my sofa.
"What are you doing here?" He tried to stand and stumbled slightly. "I had nowhere else to go," he murmured, trying to reach for me. "And I needed you.
You've never needed me before." He swayed and I let him fall to one knee. "This is different," he pleaded, and for the first time his eyes seemed genuine. Not full of the lies, half-truths and trickery I had come to expect from him.
"I went too far. I know I did. I crossed too many lines." "You've crossed every line that's ever been drawn," I corrected.
He didn't try to get up again, just remained as he was: one knee on the ground, gazing up at me as if he were drowning and I were about to pluck him out of the ocean's clutches.
"I know," he said quietly. "That's why I need you. You're the only one who's good enough. You can teach me."
"Teach you what?" I searched desperately for a lie in his face but there was nothing. He was broken, raw,
