36. Actions have consequences.

Start from the beginning

Tears welled up in my eyes as I struggled to find the words to respond, feeling the weight of my guilt crushing me from all sides.

"I...I don't know," I stammered, my voice barely a whisper. "I'm sorry. I thought that it was only a phase and she'd come back home so you guys didn't have to worry..."

But my words trailed off into sobs as I buried my face in my hands, unable to bear the weight of his accusing gaze any longer. The room fell silent, save for the sound of my own ragged breathing and the muffled sobs that escaped from my trembling lips.

I knew that no matter what I said, it would never be enough to undo the pain and suffering I had caused. All I could do was apologize and hope for his forgiveness, even though I knew I didn't deserve it.

"I couldn't even tell my wife the news," he continued, his voice trembling with emotion. "She'd probably die if she heard. I had to tell her a lie when the hospital called, and it was a lucky thing I picked up the phone instead of her."

My heart ached at his words, knowing that my actions had not only hurt Khloe but had also inflicted untold suffering on those who loved her most. The thought of Khloe's mother, blissfully unaware of her daughter's condition, filled me with a deep sense of sorrow.

Before I could respond, the door suddenly opened, revealing Liam standing there with a doctor by his side. Relief flooded through me at the sight of him, mixed with a sense of apprehension about what news he might bring.

"Liam," I breathed, my voice barely above a whisper.

As Liam's gaze swept over me, his eyes filled with rage, I felt a chill run down my spine. His anger was notably, directed not at me but at Mr. Wright, and I feared he would do something bad to Mr. Wright.

Before the tension in the room could escalate any further, the doctor spoke, her voice cutting through the silence like a knife. "I'm Doctor Holmes," she began, her tone calm and professional. "I'm here to provide an update on Khloe's condition."

"Khloe was found unconscious due to an overdose of opioids," she continued, her gaze moving between the individuals in the room. "Specifically, she had injected a dangerous combination of prescription painkillers and other substances. Some of these painkillers were fentanyl, methamphetamine, morphine etc."

"These substances are highly deadly stimulants that affect the central nervous system," the doctor explained, her tone grave. "They can cause severe agitation, hallucinations, and, in Khloe's case, resulted in a state of hyperarousal followed by respiratory depression."

"The combination of methamphetamine and cocaine led to a profound increase in her heart rate and blood pressure, putting immense strain on her cardiovascular system," she continued. "This, coupled with the respiratory depression caused by the opioids, led to Khloe slipping into a coma."

"As you know, these substances are highly addictive and can have devastating effects on the body," the doctor added. "They can lead to cardiovascular collapse, respiratory failure, coma, and even death if not treated promptly."

"Thankfully, because of Liam's quick thinking and decisive action, Khloe's life was spared."

Immediately I went to hug Liam, I wanted to be in his arms.

Meanwhile, Mr. Wright's cries filled the room, his anguish echoing off the walls as he struggled to come to terms with the news. "I don't believe my baby girl is capable of anything like this," he sobbed, his words choked with emotion.

The doctor, seeing Mr. Wright's anguish, placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, offering words of solace in a gentle tone. "I understand this is incredibly difficult for you, Mr. Wright. Please know that we are doing everything we can for Khloe," she said, her voice filled with compassion.

Then, her expression turning solemn, the doctor continued, "Unfortunately, Khloe's counterpart wasn't as fortunate. He was pronounced dead at the scene."

Mr. Wright's cries grew louder at the devastating news, his disbelief overweighting as he repeated, "No, no, no, my baby girl is capable of anything like this!"

"Who is this other counterpart?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

The doctor hesitated for a moment before responding, her expression grave. "His name is Danny Grayson."

My heart skipped a beat at the mention of Danny's name, and a wave of shock washed over me. Danny Grayson, my colleague, the same person who had blasted me at the lunch and was subsequently suspended for his actions. I couldn't believe that he was dead?

"Danny Grayson?" I repeated, my voice trembling with disbelief. "But...but he's my colleague. H-how could he be dead?"

The doctor's expression remained firm as she nodded in confirmation. "I'm afraid so, Quinn. Danny Grayson was found with Khloe at the scene, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. His blood shows he had double the overdose as Khloe, he had been taking heavy doeses of drugs which has been in his system for way longer." I gasped.

Liam's hand was rubbing circles around my body consoling me which helped a lot.

My mind raced as I tried to make sense of the news. I couldn't comprehend how someone I had worked with and considered a colleague could be caught up in such a devastating situation.

The realization hit me like a punch to the gut, filling me with a profound sense of shock and disbelief.

As tears welled up in my eyes, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of sorrow for both Khloe and Gray.

Liam stepped aside to take the call, his expression immediately tense, indicating that it was an important conversation. Meanwhile, Mr. Wright turned to the doctor with a pleading look in his eyes.

"What is the probability of Khloe waking up?" he asked, his voice quivering with sorrow.

The doctor sighed, her expression sympathetic yet guarded. "It's difficult to say with certainty," she began carefully. "Given the severity of her condition and the extent of the damage caused by the overdose, the prognosis is uncertain. We are doing everything we can to support her recovery, but it will ultimately depend on her body's response to treatment."

Mr. Wright nodded, his shoulders slumping in despair as he absorbed the news.

Meanwhile, Liam returned from his call, his face a mask of any emotion. "I will do everything in my power to support Khloe,"

Turning to me, Liam's expression softened as he spoke softly, "I need to leave, but I'll be back as soon as I can. Take care of yourself, Quinn."

I nodded, my heart heavy, as Liam leaned in to kiss me goodbye, I closed my eyes, silently praying for Khloe's recovery.

After some time, Mr. Wright excused himself to talk to his wife, leaving me alone with Khloe in the hospital room. I sat by her bedside, watching over her, consumed by guilt and sorrow.

Time passed in a blur of tears and anxious waiting until finally, exhaustion overtook me. My vision grew dizzy from all the crying, and the world around me blurred. The next thing I knew, darkness enveloped me.

When I finally regained awareness, I found myself lying on a hospital bed, disoriented and confused. The doctor stood nearby, a gentle smile on her face.

"What happened?" I asked, curious to know why I was in a hospital bed.

The doctor explained calmly, "One minute you were next to your friend and then the next we found you unconscious on the ground. We wanted to take precautionary measures, so we ran some tests on you while you were unconscious."

"So?" I asked, I knew that everything was ok with me.

With a smile, the doctor said, "Congratulations, Quinn. You're pregnant."

I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me as I stared at the doctor in shock and disbelief. Pregnant? The news hit me like a ton of bricks, filling me with a mix of emotions ranging from disbelief and surprise.

"I-I'm pregnant?"
