Green sighed, leaning back onto the stage until he was staring off at the ceiling. Or as much as a blind guy could stare, Blue guessed.
"I just wish that I weren't blind. Even if I could see just a little teeny tiny bit- it would be enough. Enough for me to know what I'm touching, for me to stop walking into walls all the time." Green said wistfully.
Blue leaned back too, resting his back against the cold stage floor beside Green. He looked up at the ceiling. It wasn't anything interesting, not like watching clouds, or stars, but Green wouldn't be able to watch it anyway, so Blue didn't say a word.
"Well...I know I've been saying this over and over..." Blue said, about to repeat a phrase that he had said many times, but surprisingly, Green actually beat him to it.
"Yeah yeah, I know. 'Red's working on getting you some glasses.'" "He said, trying to mimic Blue's voice by lowering his own.
Blue giggled at the silly attempt. Green continued anyway. "But you know that glasses can't actually bring back sight. They can only enhance the sight that's already there. Red said so." He said.
Blue hummed for a moment. "Well maybe you actually have a little bit, and just don't know it?" He said, trying to remain optimistic. Green noticed, and turned his head, smiling in his direction.
"Maybe." Green said, not seeming willing to entertain the thought further. Blue took the hint and didn't press further. He knew that Green was trying to keep his expectations low to prevent himself from getting disappointed, but Blue didn't want him to give up quite yet.
"Look, maybe when we've figured out what to do with the Lookies, you should just see how the glasses are coming along? You might be surprised." Blue said with a shrug.
Green was silent for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah. I think I'll do that." He said.
As Green continued to stare at the ceiling, lost in thought, Blue sat up and took off his crown. He looked at it in his hands, tilting it as he studied it.
He knew that the crown was simply an accessory, and it lacked true sentimental value, but he still felt like he was undeserving of it some days. Blue had a castle, a crown, a throne. Blue was a king.
But a king of what?
He thought about what Red had told him the other day. There really were others once. Blue didn't know who they were, but something bad must have happened to drive them away, right?
Maybe they were his people, Blue thought, smiling at the idea. Maybe he was a king, once. He thought about what his kingdom would have been like, if it had ever been real in the first place.
But then he thought about what Red had said next. They weren't coming back. Red sounded so sure as he said that. But how did he know that they wouldn't come back?
If they were friends, then they were sure to come back, Blue had to stay positive. He couldn't afford to lose hope, not like the others.
It wasn't too late for them, he was sure. Maybe his duty as a king truly was to lead his people. To inspire them, to be their light in the darkness.
Maybe Blue could be a king for his friends.
He gazed upon the crown in his hands, wondering if that was why he had been chosen to wear a golden crown. Maybe it was a coincidence, or really just an accessory. But Blue could make it something more.
Blue finally stopped daydreaming and put the crown back on his head. He looked over at Green to see him still laying down, his eyes wide open, staring at nothing.
Blue felt a stab of pity. Green couldn't even see. Not only was he trapped here, but he was trapped and blind.
He knew that Green didn't deserve what he had. Blue wanted to make things better for him, to give him what he deserved, but he still didn't know how.
He really, really hoped that the glasses would be able to fix his sight.
Blue was scared for Green. There were days that he...said things about himself. Things that Blue couldn't bear to listen to, things that Blue knew weren't true.
Part of the reason he was so protective of Green was because he was so scared for him.
Blue was determined not to let his friend fall, and he would try his best to keep Green healthy and safe, no matter what it took.
