The Next Morning:

True to his word, Simeon did not come back. For that, I am grateful, although I feel a certain sense of emptiness this morning. His kiss had held so much promise, but now, I feel as if it were a final goodbye.

Mother does not wake for some time, and so I look around the empty house. She could have brought on a servant after I left, especially with the money Ephraim had given her, but she did not. The house was not much to keep up with, and Mother had always been an excellent cook. Only now, I see the place is disheveled, the kitchen's contents poured out on the floor as if a madman had gone through looking for a grain of sand.

Suddenly, I feel dizzy, and the scent of spilled wine fills my nostrils. I grab my veil and hurry out of the house.
