Then, now and forever

"Kolya, look out!"

"Don't worry Fedya, I got this~"

You chuckle as you heard the two men bicker downstairs while setting up the christmas tree. You were in the attic, wrapping up your presents for Fyodor and Nikolai in some christmas themed giftwrap. After a while of only hearing the noises of them trying to properly set up the tree and their constant fighting. But eventually the noises stopped. Looks like they could do it after all.

Finishing to wrap up the presents, you hid them in the attic and grabbed a box with some decorations for the tree before going downstairs. As you reached the end of the staircase, you were met with a floor full of fir branches and fir needles. They may have managed to get the tree inside without destroying something but they sure made a mess.

Reaching the living room, you placed the box on the parlor table and eyed the conifer in your living area. Nikolai stood beside it, proudly crossing his arms over his chest while Fyodor was already getting the fairy lights. You smiled at both men before coming closer and starting examinate the tree a bit until the russian was done with untangling the lights.

He was rather quick with that task, which surprised you honestly. You always needed almost an hour to do that. He must have pretty skilled hands to do that in such short amount of time. Fyodor and you began to wrap the fairy lights around the tree. It wasn't a big tree so all three of you could easily reach the top. Nikolai was already rumaging through the boxes with the baubles and other decorations, an undoubtly excited grin on his lips.

After setting up the fairy lights and plugging them in, the room was flooded in a cozy, golden light, creating a fitting atmosphere for the upcoming christmas eve. While Nikolai and Fyodor started to decorate the tree further (which basically consisted of Fyodor critising how Nikolai decided to decorate and Nikolai intentionally provoking him), you went to the kitchen to make some hot chocolate for Nikolai and you. For Fyodor you decided to make a cup of tea instead, since he preffered that.

Just as you were done with Fyodor's drink, you heard the ringing of your phone. You were a bit surprised because you usually didn't get calls from other people. Therefor i flinched a bit when you heard the unfamiliar noise of your device. Setting the cup onto the counter, you walked over to your phone laying on the opposite side of the kitchen and looked at the caller ID. You almost got a heart attack as you saw who it was.

The caller was none other than your mother, or more step mother. You couldn't believe your own eyes for a second. Why would she call you now? You haven't spoken since years. You broke contact with all members of your family and even though you still had the number of your mother, you never bothered to actually reach out to her. So which reasons could she possibly have to call you? You doubted that it was just to say 'hello' or ask how you have been doing all this time. You even doubted she would care enough about you to ever think of that. If you were honest, you thought she already forgot that you even exsisted, like you were just a remote dream.

Hesitantly picking up the phone, you stared at it for a couple of seconds. Should you really pick up the call? What did she want? Or was this some sick joke? Before you could even think about these questions, your finger moved on itself and accepted the call.

"...Hello?", you hesitantly asked with a quiet voice since you didn't want the two men in your living room to hear the call you were about to have?

"Hello? (Y/N)", your mother asked. You couldn't quite make out the tone she was speaking with so you decided to ask further.

"Yes, it's me. ...May I know why you are calling me?"

There was a moment of silence from the other side of the line, which made you visibly uncomfortable. Your hand gripped tightly onto the edge of the counter any you gritted your teeth.
