WHEN KAZ SAID WE WOULD BE WALKING for the next two days I was ready to shove his cane down his throat and throw him back in the fold. I almost thought he was joking, but of course, he wasn't.
For the first day Jesper insisted he walk with me to make sure I didn't collapse, it made me feel pathetic, but I understood he was doing it out of care. I'd performed with broken bones before, but it seemed the Generals shadows were far more painful than the gash itself.
On the second day I'd finally convinced him I was alright, but trailed behind slightly, even I wasn't sure if it was pain or just mental distance keeping me behind but it didn't matter much. Eventually I felt a presence at my side.
"Jesper really, I said I was-" when I looked up it was not who I'd thought. "Kaz?"
"What do you plan to do when we get back to Ketterdam?" He looked me dead in the eyes, which caught me off guard and I felt my subconscious walls go up.
"I'm not sure." I smoothed out my accent, it was an unfortunate tell when I was lying or just generally hiding something, but no one ever noticed because no one ever heard me speak truthfully.
He frowned, "I swore to keep you safe in return for your talents, if you are still willing to join the crows, I will keep them away from you."
I stopped in my tracks and looked at him, "join the crows? Like, for good?"
He nodded.
My heart was pounding, I knew to some extent Inej and Jesper were my friends, and considered me theirs; but with Kaz, he confused me, I desperately wanted to understand him. Every nerve in me longed to help him, or at least give him whatever revenge he seemed to long for, but I never truly knew if he thought of me even remotely like that.
"Jesper and Inej both like you," he started, "you work well with the team." He paused for a moment, "they... I need you."
I slowly nodded, "okay."
He began to walk ahead once more before I stopped him, "Kaz." He looked back and I grinned, "thank you."
