"Me being 41"

"Oh my god, don't be weird. Just...don't" I groaned, trying to contain laughter because I didn't want to prove her joke actually made me laugh.

"You started it"

"Yeah, okay" I shook my head. "Let's have breakfast so I can give you your present"

I'd luckily been thinking of what to get to her in advance, so I'd already had what I needed for the past two weeks. I knew she was going to say stuff like "You didn't need to get me anything", so I tried to find something small but meaningful.

"If you don't like it, blame it on your sister. I asked for her advice" I said as she unwrapped the box.

"I'm scared now" she chuckled. "Oh. Wait. Is this what I think it is?"

"I don't know, open it" I laughed, really hoping she'd like it.

"It is!" she enthusiastically said, even more than I thought, once she saw the name of some English tea brand on top of the box, and opened to see smaller boxes full of different sorts of teas, English biscuits and a customized tea strainer and mug inside of it.

"You've often said you miss English tea, so I asked Lauren what your favorite brand was" I said, smiling at how pleased she looked.

"You don't understand how much this means to me" she said, pulling me into a hug. "Thank you"

"I'm glad you like it" I couldn't help but keep smiling, partially because I didn't get how someone could be so enthusiastic  because of... tea.

"I love it" she cupped my face and kissed me.

"Such a stereotype..." I laughed, her hands still on my cheeks.

"And I'm proud of it" she said as she unexpectedly pushed me down on the couch we were sitting on, straddling the sides of her body with her legs. "Is making out as a thank you included in the gift?" she added as she reconnected her lips with mine.

After a morning in which she thanked me in that way many times, until Lauren called and we talked to her for a while, I convinced Sam to go out for lunch. And for once she was the one who insisted on going somewhere very lowkey and not fancy.

I didn't realize we wouldn't get to spend the whole day together anymore in a few days because of her work and my classes until she'd reminded me, so I was actually happy to have a casual day with her, although I wished she didn't keep insisting her birthday was like any other normal day.

I'd already got her a gift, but I also absolutely wanted her to have a proper birthday cake too. And since I wasn't very good at baking, I'd called a local bakery to have a custom one made.

"Uhm, you go ahead. I need to...stop by somewhere" I said as we walked back home.

"What? Where? I'll come with you" she furrowed a brow.

"No, uhm, I'm...I should go alone" I basically failed at lying. Why were my acting skills so bad?

"Oh. Okay. Okay, then" she laughed, slightly confused. "See you home then?"

"Yeah. I'll be quick" I couldn't help but also laugh, allowing her to kiss me before we parted ways.

At least knowing that she'd already basically understood what I was up to meant I didn't need to be weirdly secretive about it once I got back home.

"I don't know where you are but please do not come into the kitchen for approximately the next five minutes" I said as I walked in, rushing to the kitchen and placing the box on the counter.
