By Myself

I wiped the tears away and sniffled as I drove through the town intersection, turning left towards where I lived. I pulled into the driveway and tried to compose myself so my mum wouldn't know anything was wrong. She didn't need more stress.

I picked up my phone, turned the car off, wiped away any remaining tears and took a huge breath. Deep breaths always helped but they didn't heal wounds or cure the cancer your best friend had. I locked my car and unlocked the front door, letting myself in and then re-locking it behind me. Mum must have heard because she came out of her room and towards the kitchen where the front door was.

"Harry, where have you been?" she looked tired and worried.

"I've just been driving around, hanging with friends, all that kinda stuff," I put my keys on the counter and plugged my phone into the charger.

"Honey, have you been crying?" she looked into my eyes and lifted my chin to make me look at her. It took all the will in me to make sure my lips wouldn't tremble and my eyes wouldn't water.

"No mum of course not, I was just out having fun," I muster a fake, happy seeming laugh and she seems to believe it.

"Oh, it's just in this light your eyes look a bit red and watery, Harry, but I guess not," she puts her hand on my cheek, smiles and kisses my forehead.
"You know I love you very much, Harry, right?"

"Yes mum, I love you too," I smile at her, trying to keep everything pleasant.

"I'm going to bed early, there's some chicken in the fridge if you want it," she leans in the doorway to her room and points over to the fridge.

"Okay, thanks mum. Goodnight," I head over to my phone because I see that it is lit up as though I have a text. Mum goes into her room and I can hear the door shut.

I did indeed have a text, and it's from someone I didn't expect at all.

Jameson: "Hi Harry, I'd really like to see you right now. If you can't, it's okay I'll understand. Thanks anyways, Jameson."

I quickly write back.

Me: "Sure, i can pick you up right now if you want?"

I wait for a reply as I pour a glass of iced tea and sit on the couch, staring at the phone. After a half an hour, I still have no reply. I get a weird feeling in my stomach and decide to grab my keys and show up anyways. I pull out of the driveway and drive to the house that I dropped her off at the other day. As soon as I get out of the car I hear yelling and crashing.

"You bitch, cheating and texting this fucking asshole who doesn't even give a shit about you, it's amusing a slut like you would think he cares for you," a man yells and laughs.

I start to run and bash on the door like an insane person.

"Is that him right there? Huh? You fucking piece of shit," I hear a couple bangs and a scream of agony.

"Open the fucking door!" I yell as I'm dialing the local police.

I hear laughing inside and more bangs, the man clearly ignoring me. I tell the police what's going on and when done I run around the side to an open window. I manage to get through it and sneak around to head as quietly as I can to the room the man's voice came from. I looked around a corner and saw Jameson lying there, her face bleeding all over the floor. She had numerous injuries and the man stood over her yelling all sorts of profanities at her and kicking her. I run like hell towards him and push him really hard against the brick of the living room wall. He looks dazed and when I look into his face I know he's the boyfriend who was beating her up when I first met her. I hear the police sirens coming closer and I decide to take the opportunity to give him a piece of my mind.

"What the fuck are you doing?! You fucking low life asshole thinking it's okay to beat the shit out of this girl all the time. You piece of shit, you're going to hell, I hope you know that. Jameson deserves so much better than an ass like you who thinks abuse is okay. You know what, you're going to jail and hell so fuck you!" I gave him a punch that knocks him out and let him drop to the floor. I run to Jameson and sit with her and the police come running in with the paramedics. The paramedics put her on a gurney and rush her out and into the ambulance. The cops go to her disgusting boyfriend and cuff his unconscious body and carry him to the police car. Good riddance asshole.

As soon as the police and ambulance leave, I get into my car and follow the same path to the hospital. This time, I made sure I wouldn't talk myself out of leaving early, there's people that need me there.
