It felt nice outside; not too warm, but just right. You sat in the seat on the deck, eyes closed, laid back, listening to the ocean move and crash against the sand. You had to take in all of it while you still could. You’re summer break was over and you had to go back home tonight. You were having a hard time with it, but you were more worried about Niall. You two met at the beginning of June and nearly spent every day together at his beach house since.  He knew you were going back tonight, but he had been distant all day. You didn’t want his avoiding you to be the last memory of him. You go back inside, the air conditioning giving you goose-bumps, and find him in the living room. His headphones were on his head, his guitar in his hands. He was humming as he ran his fingers over the strings, playing a song you didn’t recognize.

You sat next to him, placing your hand on his shoulder, rubbing it over his hoodie. He turned his face to you and gave a faint smile. He pushes his headphones around his neck before asking how you were doing. “I’m fine.” You say placing your head on his shoulder. You know if you look into his blue eyes sadness will wash over you. “How about you? I feel like you’ve been avoiding me all day.” “Kind of.” He admits, dropping his head a little. “I wanna play you something.” He says straightening the guitar in his hands again. You sit up, not knowing what to expect. Niall takes a deep breath before he starts playing a beautiful song.

“Can't believe you're packing your bags
Trying so hard not to cry
Had the best time and now it's the worst time
But we have to say goodbye”

“Oh Niall.” You let out as he continues on.

“Don't promise that you're gonna write
Don't promise that you'll call
Just promise that you won't forget we had it all
Cause you were mine for the summer
Now we know it's nearly over
Feels like snow in September
But I always will remember
You were my summer love
You always will be my summer love”

His lyrics cause tears to roll down your eyes and you try your best to wipe them away. His head remains down, focused on his strumming.

“Wish that we could be alone now
If we could find some place to hide
Make the last time just like the first time
Push a button and rewind
Don't say the word that's on your lips
Don't look at me that way
Just promise you'll remember when the tide is grey” he continues on to the chorus and you can hear his voice crack a little.

“So please don't make this any harder
We can't take this any farther
And I know there's nothing that I wanna change, change”

It’s these lyrics that cause your tears to never end. You don’t try to wipe them away anymore. His song was just the truth with a melody. When he finishes the last line he looks at you, revealing his red eyes and wet lines on his cheeks. He sets the guitar on the table and pulls you into a hug, kissing the side of your eye to get you to stop crying. “I will always love you.” He whispers in your ear and you hold him tighter. This, this you could handle. This would be how you remember him; loving, kind, sweet, perfect.
