The Lamentation of Elmire

26 6 9

In the shadow of night, thou camest unto us, oh wicked fiend.

Of thy face thou suffered not a tongue to tell,

That dawn should be charged to shew forth thy ruinous handiwork.

Pelenduil, oh thou great destroyer;

For what cause hath the earth loosed thee from the wretched depths of hell?

For what cause cry our children's bones from the ashes of thy ravenous flames?

For what cause hast thou left us to suffer in the wake of thy cruel hatred,

To be held captive in a land of seasonless desolation?

For the poison of thine ash is as rot upon the tree; it corrupteth the earth,

That spring shall bear fruit no longer and hide from us her blooming splendour.

Pelenduil, oh thou great destroyer;

For what cause hast thou abandoned thy relentless rampage,

Returning to slumber to slay no more?

What day shalt thou return; what evil omen shall herald our final doom?
