Sliver sat on one of the tall hills on the island, looking at the setting sun. He never noticed it before, how the sun sunk like a ship into the horizon. He used to see things so small, never truly looking up. Until... he met Candle. She had... a different way... of seeing the world. You could say she looked at it through a third eye. Sliver remembered her soft and gentle voice, her kind eyes, her beautiful flame. At first he'd been hostile, but she changed him. As he watched the orange, pink sky become a deeper purple, he couldn't help but sigh.
"Candle, you and your bewitching kindness..."
He mumbled. He began to feel tears swell in his eyes, but he couldn't show vulnerability. Weakness was his adversary in this game. He took out Candle's gift, it making him smile. Even though she was gone, it felt like a part of her was still there. He closed his eyes and breathed in deep, hearing the waves crash against the beach. The bugs and breeze making a calming noise. The rustling of shrubbery and trees dancing with the wind. He continued to breathe in deep, in and out, like Candle would. And then, he tapped the crystal with the metal tool Candle gifted him. He smiled, almost as if the weight of guilt lifted from him. But when he opened his eyes, there was nothing but a dark endless space with stars. No noise, no floor, and yet no panic. He was shocked, but... he almost expected this.
"W-what is the meaning of this-"
"Sliver?"
A soft voice called out from behind him. He quickly spun around with joy. It was Candle... yet... something was off. For one, he couldn't see her flame, it looked like it was there but... not burning. And... he couldn't see her face. No matter how hard he looked and no matter if he knew it was there or not, he couldn't see it. Worried, he sort of stumbled back into the darkness.
"Candle! But something seems off... I can't... see your face..."
"That's because you can't remember what I look like."
Sliver slightly panicked, now it became clear none of this was real.
"T-This is fake! Stop this you witch!"
Even though Sliver couldn't see her face, something told him that what he said has made her frown.
"It... it doesn't have to be fake Sliver... you could come with me, and remember my smile again..."
"...you're lying! You aren't real... YOU AREN'T EVEN HER!"
Candle seemed upset again as she began to float away, back into the darkness. This only made Sliver more distressed.
"WAIT! CANDLE! DON'T LEAVE ME AGAIN!"
He tried to run to her, outstretching his hand for her. She smiled, beginning to leave faster.
"NO, NO NO NO!"
He began to sob, running to her as fast as he could, but it seemed the universe wouldn't allow that. He was stuck.
"Please... Candle, darling... I love you."
Candle spoke once again, with her darling tone.
"Remember, Sliver. We shall always be connected."
Sliverspoon jolted awake, tears streaming from his eyes, hyperventilating.
"C-c-candle?!"
He looked at the gift she had given him, and then at the deep night sky...
"Oh, Candle..."
