My community headlines….
Perpetuated by day, and it dims at dusk
For the sordid, grisly and now mostly rampant crimes
Where the screams and silent cries of the abused they mask
They our beloved kin, neighboring folk, clergymen to
They all are a part of this grand circus that our village is home to

At dawn, the boys whip their cows to graze
Young ladies file to the watering hole, tins balanced on heads
A beauty to behold, this one vibrant non-violent community
Flourishing in the ideals of peace, love and unity
Grounded! True ubuntu thriving both near and far
And whispering proudly, “I am because we are!”

Not anymore! Not so today!
My community reeks of violence
A norm they now say!
The bishop’s wife he bruises with clenched fists
The baker’s daughter he scars ripping and clawing at her hips
The butcher’s son, a sodomy victim since birth traumatized
The policeman’s wife? Her heart and limbs he mutilated
Hush! Mind your own they warn again
My community is a conspiracy
Of silence and chosen absence
