Shadow rested against the bathroom wall, staring at his unbandaged wounds. None were new or fresh, but he couldn't help but stunt their recovery.
The more he stared at them, the worse he felt. He couldn't believe he had been so selfish, pathetic, and weak. He couldn't believe he let Sonic find out. But Sonic didn't really find out. Shadow's best friend of several years had told him.
He knew, deep down, it was for the better, but he had been keeping it from Sonic for a reason. All he wanted was for him to be happy, especially after the whole thing with G.U.N. and Elias. Sonic had two injured legs, a healing heart, and new-found trauma, all because of him. At least, that's what he believed.
The way Sonic had cried when Elias was finally dead broke Shadow's heart. A horrible mix of sorrow, pain, and despair melded into heartbreaking wails, his tears soaking into Shadow's fur.
His phone lit up with a notification from Sonic. He sighed and picked the device up, reading the message.
'Can you please unlock the door ?'
Shadow pulled down his pant legs, heaved himself up, then unlocked the bathroom door, revealing Sonic leaning on his newly aquired crutches to support his weight. Nerves in his right leg had been severed, making his ability limited. Rouge had snagged him a pair of forearm crutches, as they were much easier and efficent than hospital crutches.
"Hey, Shadow." He smiled.
"Hey." Shadow muttered. He helped Sonic transfer from his crutches to the floor, then sat beside him.
"It scares the shit out of me when you lock yourself in here." He sighed. "To the point where I'm going to ask you to show me your legs."
"Sonic, I didn't cut myself."
"I believe you, I do. I just need to make sure."
Shadow nodded in understanding, putting his healing thighs on display. A small smile tugged at Sonic's lips.
"Listen, I'm really sorry I make you do that, it's just-"
"I know, Sonic. It's fine."
The two sat in silence, thinking over their short conversation. Shadow stood up, offering his hand to his lover, then handed him his crutches.
"I wanted to take you somewhere." Shadow murmured, leading Sonic out of the house.
"What? Where are we going?" He asked nervously.
"Don't worry, faker."
He lead his lover through the mobian woods, to the loop; the same loop where he said goodbye to Sonic. Panic rose in the azure hedgehog's chest as they approached the site, but he pushed it down, refraining from jumping to conclusions. Shadow sat him down on the loop, instructing him to close his eyes. He could hear the shuffling of his companion in front of him, but resisted the temptation to crack his eyes open.
"Okay, open them."
Sonic opened his eyes to see Shadow below him, on one knee, with a small box in his hands.
"It's been a rough while, and it's changed us both. I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am for everything I've put you through. I've decided that life's too short, and I want to spend the rest of yours with you."
He paused.
"Sonic, will you marry me?"
