A gloomy night. A starless sky. An empty bar. A full glass of whiskey. A wonderful moment to be alive. I laid my head on the bar-table in front of me, my pointer finger twirling the rather large round piece of ice in my glass. It was a calm and peaceful night.. yet for some reason I felt on edge. What could possibly go wrong?

As if to answer my question, a grinning brunette in a beige trench-coat suddenly made an appearance in the room. He completely ignored my presence, sitting three stools away from me and ordering a whiskey, just like me. While the barista made his drink, he looked around the place with a bored look, his chin resting on his palm. Although completely disregarding me upon his first appearance, he now seemed to be quite intrigued in me, his eyes burning holes into the side of my face.

"What is it?" I asked after about a minute of dead silence, turning my head to meet his chocolate-brown eyes which seemed to hold a kaleidoscope of secrets. He blinked twice, as if snapping out of a trance before sending me a lopsided grin and looking away without answering my question.

"Not greeting an old friend? That's low, even for you, Dazai-san." I smirked at him, and his head immediately snapped back to me, his eyes widening just the slightest bit as he stared at me with wonder. He narrowed his eyes at me for a couple of seconds before raising a brow and finally speaking.

"Who are you?"

I tilted my head, an innocent look gracing my face. "Huh? I'm your favourite N/n, of course." I watched in amusement as he slowly turned back to me, visibly still processing the information in his mind. He opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out and he closed it again. This repeated a couple of times as I watched him gape at me like a fish just taken out of water.

"What, is something wrong? I thought you said you didn't care about me." I said tauntingly, knowing those words were uttered in the heat of the moment and that he didn't actually mean them. But it was just so much fun seeing his expression suddenly become one of guilt; it was fun to see emotions finally show on his face.

"I.. You know I didn't mean that." He said, avoiding my gaze that took in every little detail on his face, from the darks bags under his eyes to his rosy-pink lips, which parted slightly as he mumbled something under his breath.

"Hm? What did you say?"

He furrowed a brow, finally looking up, although focusing on the shelf behind me, "I said you know I didn't mean that." He repeated, before his eyes suddenly shone in realisation, "Oh, no, nothing." Those words were obviously a lie, as I knew him too well to distinguish when he told one.

"Aw, you're no fun." I pouted, "To think that you're hiding things from me.. What happened to our always be honest promise?" To be honest, it probably wasn't very nice to say such words after meeting your long lost best friend again, but at this point I was too far in to stop.

As Dazai once again found himself at a loss of words, finally realising just how important Y/n was in his life, he suddenly felt the emptiness that was always at the bottom of his stomach leave at last.

He reminisced of the times they spent together pranking executives; teasing Chuuya to his grave; taking long meaningless walks in the park while holding hands—like any normal friends would do—and laughing at his stupid jokes; going on missions together; spending the most heart-touching moments- No, Dazai, it was your choice to leave her, to follow Oda's advice. You can't just let her bring you right back for another ride of the Ferris Wheel of Misery, he scolded himself, before N/n's silky, incomprehensibly convincing voice snapped him back to reality.

"So, Dazai-san? Are you actually giving up on that promise, on me? I never thought that day would come." I said, looking away from him while taking a gulp of my whiskey, pretending to be depressed. I adjusted my position on my stool, looking at the wall opposite me in a blank stare.
