Katoria Halim
Today is my sixteenth birthday and I couldn't be happier. I moved out of my mom's house and now I live with my dad, although I still go to the same school.

I got out of my big bed and got in the shower and freshen up. I put on a green floral pants jumpsuit and dark brown sandals. My hair was wrapped up, so I ran a comb through it a few times. I was ready for a new style.

I went downstairs and saw my dad in the kitchen on the phone. He looked at me and then took the phone away from his ear.

"You look good today, princess. Are you going to school?" He asked. I shook my head. I didn't want people to wish me happy birthday, simply because I wouldn't have the energy to thank them.

He nodded and continued his conversation for a few minutes and then hung up. He had on a plain white tee and dark Levi jeans. He looked handsome.

"Go start the car." He said. I walked to the side door that led to the garage and opened the door.

A black car was next to his brown truck with a big red bow on it. I put my hands over my mouth and gasped.

"No way this is mines." I said to myself. I heard my dad's footsteps come up behind me and he hugged me.

"It's all yours." He said and he gave me the key to it.

"Oh my gosh!" I said getting happy. How did he afford this? I asked myself. It was now when I realized that I didn't know what my father did for a living.

"Can we go out to eat? I'll drive." I said walking over to the driver's side. He chuckled and nodded.

My phone buzzed and it was a text from Marlo.

Marlo💛- happy birthday mean ass, you comin to school?

thank you & no

Marlo- alright

I closed my messages and put the seatbelt on. I looked for the ignition, but there wasn't one. After my dad locked up the house, he got in.

"How do you start this thing?" I asked him. He pointed towards the button and I pushed it, making the car come to life. My eyes lit up. I could tell today was going to be good.

We decided to eat at iHop for breakfast, and he let me get anything I wanted on the menu. We were just talking about everything and anything. When we finished, he dropped me off at the hair shop.

I told the stylist I wanted a new look so she suggested I get a partial sew-in and dye it. At first I was doubtful, but when I actually went through with it, it was really pretty and I looked like a different person.

"I love it. How much ma'am?" I asked her. She admired her work and bounced it with the comb before answering me.

"Usually, I would charge three seventy, but since it's your day,
two sixty five." She said. I nodded and pulled three hundreds out. She looked a little taken back.

"How old did you turn today?" She asked.

"Sixteen."

She nodded and went to go get my change. I texted my dad that I was ready to go and he replied saying he was on his way.

The lady gave me my change back and I went to go sit in the waiting area. People complimented me as I made my way there and I thanked them. I don't remember the last time I felt so nice and pretty.

My dad came in my car and we left, with him driving it but I didn't mind.

"Where you goin' next, Princess?" He asked glancing at me.

"Can you get me some lunch from Wendy's and then take me to the nail shop?" I asked. He nodded an started to drive to Wendy's. I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich and fries with a frosty and then he took me to the nail shop.

He handed me two hundreds before I got out and went in. It wasn't too many people in here and that was a good thing.

"How may I help you?" An older Chinese woman asked. I looked towards the prices before answering.

"A full set and a pedicure." I said and she nodded before gesturing me over to a chair so she could get started.

Two hours later, I had mint green nails and white painted toes. I paid her and then waited on my dad to pick me up.

When he did, he looked stressed.

"What's wrong dad?" I asked. He looked over at me and sighed.

"Your mother wants to see you." He said and I rolled my eyes.

"No, I don't want to see her. Today is my day and she's not going to ruin it for me, Dad." I said.

"Remember what I said about you respecting her? You will do it. She is your mother, Katoria. You going to see her and that's that." He said and I slumped in my seat.

I hope she doesn't say anything stupid. I thought to myself.
