chapter eighty three

Start from the beginning

"You want to show me? I thought you didn't want to talk about it."

"Because I wanted to surprise you! Just let me take you out for breakfast and then you'll see. Is that okay? Are you okay with eating out?"

Clarke was ready in the next five minutes.

-

Winter had hit Polis fully now. The morning air was icy, yet the people on the market warmed the air somewhat. Knitted gloves, hats, scarfs and coats sold the best these days.

Clarke's hand was bare but she had it interwined with Lexa's, who always seemed to run warm. Their hands were tucked into Lexa's pocket.

The part of the market they ended up at wasn't unfamiliar to Clarke, it was a place along the main market line that drew itself through Polis, but something was different. Something was new.

Lexa tugged her towards the new place and Clarke's excitement grew. She loved discovering new places, stands or shops on the market and if this cute house offered breakfast, Clarke would be a happy woman for the rest of the week. At least.

The windows gave a view inside of the house, clean and probably expensive glass in a red brickwall. Lexa held the door open for Clarke and Clarke stepped inside, looking around the room. There were tables in the corner left next to the door, a dozen or two, sweet wooden tables with benches and chairs that looked like Clarke could sit inside them for a whole day. It smelled of something Clarke didn't know, but immediately fell in love with, and chocolate.

In the back though, further right from the door, there were shelves and easels, some filled with artwork to be sold and bunches of flowers. Some spaces were still empty, but it looked like they were meant to be filled. Stairs led up to a second floor and instead of sitting down for breakfast immediately, Lexa pulled her towards the stairs instead to show Clarke the upstairs space.

Clarke fell in love with the second floor just as much as she had fallen in love with the first floor.

There were armchairs and carpets, but most of the room was filled out with bookshelves. Light flooded in through the windows and lit up plants perched on the shelves. Seriously, if Clarke had put all her favorite things into one shop, this would've been the result; flowers, art, breakfast, books, Lexa.

"This is amazing. Holy shit. How beautiful is this?" Clarke gushed walking back downstairs with Lexa, where they settled into a warm, cozy corner for breakfast. "What's this smell anyway?" she asked. "It's fantastic, is it food?"

"It's a beverage called coffee. It's a common drink in other clans and I love it, so I thought, why not bring it to Polis?"

"You thought that? What, did you just go to the owners and said "hey, I want coffee here?""

"No," Lexa grinned. "I just decided to open my own coffee shop instead."

Clarke's brows furrowed. Not really sure if Lexa was joking, she asked, "You have a coffee shop?"

"Yeah. With art and flowers and books and breakfast."

Now, Clarke's mouth dropped. She stared at Lexa across the table with in disbelief widened eyes. "This is your place?"

"This is my place," Lexa confirmed proudly. "I had to organize everything, that's why I was working so much lately. But now, not anymore. Bellamy delivers the flowers. Raven helped with the shelves and even made a... machine to make the coffee easier and quicker. Your dad offered some of his special, traditional recipes for breakfast. Your mom taught the bakers how to make exceptional cupcakes. It's basically a family project. Well, your family, but still."

Clarke had still not picked her jaw off the floor. "Are you kidding? My family helped you? Oh my God, why didn't you tell me until now? This is amazing. Is this what you wanted to do? Your thing for yourself and people, but not in a survival way?"

"Yeah," Lexa smiled. She glowed, and Clarke's breath was taken away just again seeing Lexa so passionate about something. "I had an idea with the coffee, but I also wanted plants but also something creative. So I just did all of it."

"I love it," Clarke breathed. "I love this so much."

"Actually, I wanted to ask you if perhaps, you're interested in selling some of your art? Since you don't have the crocheting job anymore and you paint every day anyway, I thought maybe that'd be a job you'd enjoy, if you still want one?"

Oh God.

Clarke's life was turning concerningly perfect.
