Paul's POV
"Basketball practice on Saturday was great until you had to get hit in the face." I told Kasey as we drove to the library on Sunday.
"Next time give out a better warning!" She shouted.
I rolled my eyes and parked the car on the street.
"What are we doing here? I asked."
"We are going to learn about basic writers, and poetry."
Ugh why did I agree to this. We entered the library and I noticed a Microphone on the stage, next to a stool.
"What's going on?"
"Well I decided to bring you to the National Poetry Slam Competition, to show you how great writers can succeed."
She said with a smile which was pretty cute I have to admit.
"It starts in 30 minutes." she said.
"30 minutes? What are we going to do here?" I asked.
"I'm going to teach you how to write a basic poem." she said leading me towards an open table. She pulled out two pencils and a few papers; blank, and with previous poems.
"So a basic poem usually rhymes, what I do is I pick a topic and the words just come to me." she said looking excited.
I smiled at her, which was unusual.
"But what if they don't do that for me?" I asked.
"Well everyone's technique is different, and poetry is about expression, it's your own words." she said.
"Wow deep." I replied.
She laughed and continued to talk.
"What do you want to write about?" She asked me.
"I don't know, family?"
"That's a good topic, I'll write a short one then you continue it?"
I nodded my head yes and she started, finishing in 10 seconds.
It read
"My family is always with me
They always guide me
They always hear me
They never decide on me...."
"Now you finish it." she said.
I was in shock.
"Wow Kase your really good."
She looked at me shockingly.
"Wow am I actually getting a compliment from Paul Ardley all my dreams must be coming true." she said sarcastically.
In about 5 minutes I finally finished.
"They will trust me
And They may shove me
But my real family
Are the ones who love me."
She looked at me, her mouth opened wide.
"Wow Paul."
"Is it that bad?" I asked disappointed.
"No it's the opposite, its really good."
Coming from anyone else I wouldn't care, but coming from Kasey really meant something.
"Did this come from your heart?" She asked me looking concerned.
"Hey we are here to write poetry, not ask about my life." I said trying to push the attention away from me.
She looked a little disappointed.
"Hey umm I may not know basketball, but I do know people." she said as she got up and walked towards the Slam.
I felt a little bad. Her only friend was Josh and I'm pushing her away, but she doesn't care, does she.
I purposely sat behind her because I didn't want it to be awkward. The Slam started, and it was actually good. There was one person who talked about Black Rights, and someone who talked about Silence. When it ended I felt like a softer side of me opened up, and I didn't like that. Kasey was walking towards the door, she wasn't talking.
I grabbed her arm and spun her around looking deeply into her eyes.
"I don't like talking about my family, my parents aren't always there ok?" I said looking at her. Her face looked like she felt bad.
"Paul I had no idea I'm so sorry."
She said.
"It's all good, but your not going to be the sorry one after where I'm about to take you." I said grinning.
She looked at me confuse but followed to the car. Once we were both inside and on the road I decided to tell her. "We are going to play hockey."
"What no! I don't want to." she shouted.
"Hey we made a deal, remember." I said guilting her.
She groaned and agreed as if she had a choice. We reached the rink and got out of the car.
"What if I break my face?" She asked.
"There aren't any hospitals around so I don't know." I teased.
She rolled her eyes and entered with me.
"Ok you go change into this hockey gear, and I'll meet you on the ice?" I asked handing her the gear.
She nodded as she went to change.

5 minutes Later
"How am I supposed to play when the gear is so heavy?" She asked.
I laughed and took her hand pulling her towards the ice.
"Are you ready?" I asked.
"Ready as I'll ever be."
I quickly explained all the rules and let her start with the puck.
"And we're off!" I shouted.
We started and she flew right past me scoring in the net.
"Boo yah!" She screamed
"Beginners luck."
The next 10 times she was still scoring on me. 11-3. She was about to score her 12th when she suddenly slipped.
"Ouch!"
I skated towards her as fast as I could.
"Kasey there's blood running down your arm!" I exclaimed panicking.
"Can we just get out of here?" she asked starting to tear up.
I quickly grabbed her other arm as we skated off the ice.
"Try your best to change and once you get out we'll figure it out."
She wouldn't answer because the pain was too bad.
A few minutes later she came out, with blood dripping down her shirt.
"Ok I got bandages, give me your arm."
She nodded and came towards me.
I wiped the blood off, and put alcohol overtop so it would kill infections. I wrapped her arm and the bleeding continued.
"Are you ok?" I could tell it stung but she nodded.
"I'm fine, but I'm glad I beat you at a sport."
I looked at her amused. "Yea how did you do that?" I asked
"I don't know It just happened." she said walking towards the car.
Maybe this isn't as bad as I thought it would be.
