The doctor began again with a slight, barely noticeable, smirk on his face, "now, because of your conditions you both need rest. That means no funny business okay?" He added shaking his forefinger in what I assume meant to be humour.
I turned away from the unusual doctor just in time for me to see the slightly confused face of Kitty turn into one that rivalled a tomato after apprehension dawned. Embarrassed her hands left mine as she made sure that no part of her body was touching me. Deciding to ignore it for now, I let her put distance between us leaving me cold. An awkward silence descended as the junior doctors snickered ill-hidden behind small notebooks. I barely held in a glare as I asked when our vitals were going to be done since the sooner they were done the sooner we could be discharged.
Angry as I was, I nearly missed the glare that the doctor sent to his juniors who straightened, faces going blank.
"I'll check your vitals now to speed along the process," the doctor pronounced as he began his examinations including some prodding of my foot.
"So that looks all fine and dandy..." come on who says 'fine and dandy' anymore? I thought to myself as the doctor continued, "Your discharge paperwork will be completed shortly and you guys can get out of here. Don't forget to rest though, I don't want to see either of you back here anytime soon. Take care of each other now."
Herding the juniors out before him, the doctor left, a knowing smile crossing his face as he shut the door behind him. Good riddance. I thought as the sudden silence seemed to echo in the room. I'm thankful for all he did for both of us but come on.
Having been discharged; the first thing I did once we stepped outside the doors was to take in a deep breath of fresh air. Using the crutches lent from the hospital I nodded my head towards the carpark signs.
"They said they parked your car on level D. Lucky they didn't impound it," I muttered trying to lighten the mood.
Kitty nodded as she hovered worriedly on my left side, as she had since I had nearly fallen over when one of my crutches had slipped on some spilt water. I hated the stupid plastic things as soon as I saw them but Kitty had pulled her puppy dog face that I couldn't refuse and convinced me to use them. I couldn't help but notice how her frown grew as I awkwardly stepped forward towards the carpark. It was a slow process no matter how I tried to go at a normal pace but eventually we managed to get to the car, thankful that the elevator was functioning. I was moving towards the driver's side when Kitty suddenly stepped in front of me, hands on my chest. My eyebrows raised in response as Kitty shook her hand.
"What do you think you're doing mister?" I opened my mouth to object but Kitty continued after her seemingly rhetorical question. "You are not driving. You can't put any pressure on your foot so how can you press a pedal."
Despite my protests I was pushed gently towards the passenger side instead. Sulking slightly in the seat, I told her to be careful but Kitty just rolled her eyes as she put the car into gear and drove off back to her house.
She pulled into the garage and shut off the engine, before sinking back into the seat.
"Home sweet home," she said sarcastically making me chuckle.
Unbuckling and levering myself out of the low car I turned to pick up the crutches as Kitty slammed her door. She led me to the elevator hidden behind the grand staircase, and it soon pinged open on her bedroom floor.
"Get comfy I'm just going to get changed," she muttered in her own world as she headed towards her walk in closet.
Catching myself in the mirror, my nose scrunched up and headed towards the draw on the other side of the room which contained some spare clothes. Taking out the first thing I could find which happened to be some grey tracksuit bottoms, I threw them on and grabbed a Nike shirt that had been a gift from Kitty. Lifting the shirt over my head I caught Kitty staring, her hand on the doorknob, in the mirror. Her flushed face as her eyes wandered over my bare back gave me a massive ego boost but then as I smirked hidden by my shirt I remembered what happened this morning and what I still needed to tell her. The smirk fell before the shirt cleared my face and filled with nerves I tugged at the shirts bottom, smoothing it out. Grabbing her folded favourite pyjamas I hobbled over without the crutches to hand them to her, snapping her out of her trance. She mumbled a thanks before her expression turned serious.
