Chapter One

My breath hitched as I walked up to my new apartment building, anxiety bubbling in my stomach. 'I can do this,' I thought to myself. 'It's no big deal. Just a new state, new place to live, no clothes except what I have in my suitcase until my sister ships them to me. Yeah, no big deal.' I took in my surroundings as I went to open the door. Beautiful oak doors lead into the lobby, with big flower beds and bushes around the walkway. It was fall already, and very very cold in Minnesota, something I was not used to. Even though it was only September, in California it would still be around 80° outside. Here, it couldn't be more than 50°. That would take some time getting used to.

Opening the door, I took in a tiny gasp of air. There was a huge chandelier in the front of the lobby, with a desk about thirty feet away from the door. The lady working was around 50, and had glasses perched on the tip of her nose. She was working on some paperwork, but looked up at me expectantly and I rushed inside, not wanting to look stupid with my body in the door. I pushed my long blonde hair back behind my shoulder and walked up to the desk.

"Hi, my name is Layla Kennedy, I'm supposed to be moving into this complex today?" I said questionably, while playing with the rings on my finger.

Her nasally voice sounded slightly judgmental as she took in my appearance, which consisted of a sweatshirt with a Taylor Swift lyric and some biker shorts. "Oh yes, give me just a second to look up your name. ID please?"

I grabbed my ID out of my purse and handed it to her as quickly as I could, not wanting to anger her.

She studied it quickly, and entered the information on her computer. "Here you are. Apartment number 13, building 2. To the left of these doors behind me, and then down the hallway about six doors down. The gym is to the right, it's open 24 hours a day, and so is the pool. Here's your key, have a good day," she said, and I could tell she was bored with having to explain everything.

I nodded, taking in all the information that she said. I grabbed my ID back, and the key she was handing me, and started walking with my suitcase to the doors she said I had to go to. Outside the doors was the most beautiful garden I had ever seen in my life. It had hundreds of flowers, of every color and type. Some I didn't even recognize. It was amazing. As I continued down the hallway, I tried to find my door. '7, 9, 11, AHA 13!' I thought, as I found the door.

Putting the key into the lock, I braced myself. I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I went inside, and I hoped to god I wouldn't see any roaches or spiders. I opened the door and gasped at my new home. It was breathtaking. It had an open floor plan, with one big room as the living and dining space. I was so grateful for the hardwood floors, carpet is way too hard to clean.

Walking in the door, I took in my surroundings for my new home. The wall opposite to me had huge bay windows, with a little seat under them. Around the bay windows, they had built-in shelves and I was already picturing my extensive book collection on those shelves. The kitchen was to the right of the living space, with the prettiest sage green cabinets and super nice appliances. It also had a counter that could double as a bar space, with room for stools.
