' A contract to America. Won't that be fun? '

I stuffed my few belongings into my duffel bag, zipping it shut and setting it on the floor. I sat on the bed, chewing my lip. I already had problems with soldiers on my current team, specifically the soldiers that were coming to America with a contract of their own. The plane to America was leaving in an hour so I didn't get much time to relax. I got up, pulling the mesh and fabric sniper hood I used over my head. I adjusted it to my liking, picking up my duffel bag and slinging it over my shoulder. I pulled a pair of light tactical gloves on. I shifted the bag better on my shoulder, exiting the now relatively empty barrack. I made my way down the few flights of stairs to the barrack building's lobby. I made my way to the airfield, where the soldiers with a contract, including me, were getting flown out to America.
"Käfer!"
I heard someone in front of me, then saw the familiar female figure of one of my friends - friend - waving her hand in the air to get my attention. She was the only person I've talked to and got to know at a personal level in 3 years, besides family and only about 3 other friends outside the army. She was coming to America as well.

"Gehörn." [Horns.] I said, stopping in front of the smaller female.
"Angeregt?" [Excited?] She asked, moving next to me so we could walk and talk.
"Nein, und du bist?" [No, and you are?] I knew she wasn't genuinely asking that question.
"Amerika kann ein cooler Ort sein, also ja!" [America can be a cool place, so yes!] Horns said, looking up at me.
"Du hast deine Hausaufgaben gemacht, ja? Was ist so cool daran?" [You have done your homework, yes? What is so cool about it?] I asked her, glancing down at her. I couldn't help but let a small smile appear under my mask.
"Du lächelst! Und ja, ich habe recherchiert. Bist du nicht ein neugieriger Hund?" [You're smiling! And yes, I did research. Aren't you a curious dog?] She knocked my shoulder and I just shook my head.
"Tja? Nutze es." [Well? Use it.] I nudged her back, looking ahead once again.
"Nein. Weine darüber." [No. Cry about it.] She scoffed jokingly.
"Warum? Gemein oft?" [Why? Mean often?] I said in a whiny voice, dropping my head and dragging my feet for a second. I stopped after a moment after I heard her stifle a laugh.
"Hoffen wir auf die gleiche Einheit. Da sind ... Hunderte. Ich glaube. Ja?" [Let's hope for the same unit. There are... hundreds. I believe. Yes?] She said.
"Ja." [Yes.] I nodded.

We parted after we got to and boarded the small plane. I got a seat in the far back of the plane, while some of the other soldiers crowded to the front to scattered around the other seats. I opened my phone and pulled out my old earbuds, untangling the cord and plugging it into the charging port on my phone. I wasn't big on music but I listened to some over and over again if it's somewhere like a plane, where I generally won't be disturbed listening.I pushed the small speakers into my ears, adjusting the cord. I started chewing on my lip again, wincing slightly when I felt my lip cut a bit when I pulled it between my canines and incisors and bit down. I felt a tint taste of metals when I licked my lower lip. Looks like I wasn't going to be destroying my lips anymore, at least today. They were sore with all of the small cuts on them. I sighed, pulling my arm to the armrest and setting my head in my hand. I closed my eyes, letting more darkness fill my mind with the quiet sound of chatter under the music coming from my earbuds.

30 MINUTES AWAY FROM LANDING

I must've been really tired if I fell asleep, especially on a plane. I carefully stretched my arms up, pulling my earbuds out and putting them away. My music was paused and probably stopped a long time ago. It was almost completely quiet inside the plane, only a bit of chatter was present. I looked out the smudge-covered window I was next to. The ground was shades of green, a bit of yellow and brown - besides the many houses we flew over. I was ready to get off the plane. My legs ached and so did my back. I wasn't ready to be told my unit or who my lieutenant was or who i'd have to socialize with in my new unit, or to be scolded for being too quiet and calm or whatever people liked to say about my personality. I was taller than most on my unit, in the base in Austria really. I didn't know if I'd tower over Americans or whoever was at the base we were being dropped off at as well. I leaned back in my seat, attempting to stretch my legs under the seat in front of me, but failed without any sign of success.
