THE LIGHT WAS DIM inside of Avery's room. Her led lights in the ceiling were on a dim lavender. It made her white walls pop and her baby pink bedding turn slightly dark. Avery was lying on her stomach, watching 'Criminal Minds' on her computer, with a small bowl of cookie dough ice cream in front of her.

She knew her father would be home from the town meeting soon enough, with the same stale event of a bake-sale from Cynthia.

And she was right, because as soon as she heard the front door slam shut, she picked up the empty bowl and then raised herself up from the bed, almost immediately missing the warmth on her bare legs. She bounded down the stairs as Paul took off his jacket. "Hey, honey," he greeted, hanging the jacket up. "Hey, how was the meeting?" she asked. Paul sighed. "Well, Georgia had an idea, that instead of a bake-sale, we do a poker night," he stated. Avery chuckled. "And you need to figure out what to do?"

He nodded. "Yeah." He paused for a moment. "What sounds more fun?" he asked her, raising a brow. Avery shrugged. "As much as I like to stuff my face with junk, except for that vegan cheesecake, I think it's more fun to have a poker night. The tension, the excitement, the money," she replied. Paul nodded slowly and then checked the time on his watch. "Ah, crap," he mumbled. "Don't stay up too late. It's a school night," he told her, making her nod. "I won't. Night dad."

"Night, sweetheart." Paul kissed her temple and then walked towards the stairs and into his own bedroom.

His phone buzzed in his pocket and when he looked at the screen, he scoffed. The name Sofia popped up on his screen and he sighed, turning it off.

She just couldn't leave well enough alone. She was the reason that Avery bleached her hair blonde and felt the way green eyes suited her better than her ocean blue. She was the reason Avery was never home when the house was empty, unless she had homework due that she needed to focus on, or a boyfriend to entertain her. Even when the girl was sick, she wasn't home, preferring to be in Paul's office, on the couch, doing schoolwork or watching movies.

Sofia was the reason Avery would never know what a happy family was supposed to look like, yet Ellen Baker seemed to make her feel included in her own.
