Chapter Thirty-Five: Only Bachelor Left

Start from the beginning

Alexander is courting someone. God, that's fucking weird. And you know the strangest part? He actually likes her. Apparently, she is such a sweet soul that she clawed her way into Alexander's heart with little to no effort.

"Solomon, she's just such a kind heart, and I can't help but crave her company!"

It's not love- this candle holds nothing compared the blazing fire that Laurens lit in Alexander- but it's something. Something that made him like her beyond her social status or wealth, something that made Alex smile whenever her name is mentioned. Something sickeningly sweet, something a bit too perfect.

Perhaps I'm paranoid. Well, it's better to not get involved with such things- if this is what's going to happen, then so be it.

---

He got Mr Schuyler's blessing a few weeks later. It came in a simple cream envelope.

"Okay, are you sure this isn't too quick?" I ask, suspicious, but Alexander isn't listening, cheering and dancing across the room.

"Oh my God, oh my fucking God!" He screeches on the top of his lungs, laughing loudly and whooping. "I actually- Holy- Oh my- Huzzah!"

He hugs me with much force and almost manages to lift me from the ground- concerning, considering he and his thin build were at least half a head shorter than me.

"Alex, I can't breathe-!"

"What in the heavens is happening?" Harrison enters the room with an annoyed expression. Alexander just released me an tackled Harrison into a rib-cracking embrace. "My God! Hammie, what the hell has gotten into you?"

"I-" He scrambles to show the letter, a wide grin splitting his face. "I received Schuyler's blessing!"

Harrison is frozen for a moment, before he laughs. "Oh, well that explains it! Congratulations!"

Alexander, after a moment of composing himself, goes off to tell the rest of the family. My eyes follow him until I couldn't see him anymore. A grimace comes over my face.

"Is there an issue, Layden?" Harrison soon notices my silence. "I would expect you to be happiest at such good news!"

I shake my head. "No, I-I'm happy, I just... Is this not very early?"

"Not really, no, sir. Do you not like his lady of choice?"

His lady of choice. What a way to refer to a woman.

"I have not yet met Miss Elizabeth Schuyler."

Perhaps that is my issue. That this is happening so suddenly, that he does not love her, that I don't even know her. Harrison smiles tightly and returns to his correspondence.

News travels quickly, and, before I know it, all of the family is in the tent, congratulating Alexander on such a steal. I haven't seen him this happy... well, ever, really.

"You're soon to be the only bachelor left, Layden!" Meade said warmly, patting me on the back apologetically. I rolled my eyes with a smile and shove him off.

"As if any of us have time to worry about women," I answer and huff.

"Our petit lion did! You are just embarrassed to admit that women simply do not find your excessive workload appealing."

"Hah! Hamilton works twice as much as me, Tench, and yet Elizabeth Schuyler found that appealing."

"I believe Tench's point to still stand," Meade interjects.
