EVELYN
2am. The time flashed across the digital clock in the kitchen. I swore. Shit. Shit. I quickly discarded the drink I had poured and stumbled out of the kitchen. I had to find mackenzie... I needed to go home. I had to be up for skating practice in a few hours. How had I lost track of time so easily? The boys had finished playing 2 hours ago and I vowed to go home. I cursed myself and continued squeezing my way through the sweaty, drunk bodies as they continued dancing, the party very much still alive. Where the hell did Mackenzie go? A yelp fell from my lips as someone grabbed ahold of my hand, tugging me into them. I put out my hands so I didn't fully collide with their sweaty chest.
A boy not much older than I grinned at me and the stench of alcohol emitting off him was enough to make me sick. I coughed and turned my head away as he lowered his head closer to mine. Yelling out, I bashed my fists against his chest and ordered him to let me go. He laughed and only tightened his grip around my waist. "Come on, baby. We're just having some fun." His speech was slurred and I almost vomited at his words. I hit his chest again, trying to wiggle my way out of his grasp. "Let me go, now!" I ordered him again, reaching down to pull his hand off my hips; I could already feel the bruises that were forming there under his harsh grip. He laughed again.
I thrashed again, trying to get the attention of the group next to me but they were all too engrossed in each other. Nothing worked. I let out a shocked gasp as the drunk boy was ripped off me and shoved to the floor. Everyone's attention turned to the boys in front of me. A tall male stood over the drunk boy, a foot pressed against his chest in order to stop him from getting up. "When a lady tell you to let go, you let go asshole.'' The voice sounded familiar but I couldn't quite place it amongst all the noise. The boy that was pressed to the floor laughed. "Come on, man. We were just having fun... weren't we, darling?" I could have vomited at his words once again. I shook my head. "No, we weren't." The taller boy that had the drunk guy pinned to the ground turned, releasing his foot from the other guy's chest. My eyes widened.
It was one of the boys from Luke's band, Michael. The one that had initially ignored me. I was thankful for his help and my eyes quickly scanned the crowd, looking for either Luke or Mackenzie. Michael watched me. I cleared my throat and faced him again. "Do you know where Luke or Mackenzie went?" I asked him, ignoring the scene behind me as someone helped the drunk guy up and most people went back to their partying. He shook his head and I sighed, my body sagging a bit. "I need to get back to my apartment... Mackenzie said she'd leave with me." I explained, quickly turning to go off and find her once more.
I flinched as a hand grabbed mine and he immediately let go. Michael frowned. "Sorry.'' His voice was rough, clearly strained from the set the band just performed. He had a slight accent but I couldn't pinpoint the state he sounded like he was from. I nodded my head slightly, accepting his apology. I hadn't realized how much I was still shaking from the previous encounter I just had. I went in search of the jacket I bought with me, finding it draped over one of the couches. Grabbing it, I shrugged it on and started heading towards the exit. The sound of footsteps behind me on the dew covered grass caught my attention.
I whipped my head around and found Michael following me. Furrowing my eyebrows, I stopped and turned to face him fully. He stopped walking immediately. "What are you doing?" I asked him, crossing my arms over my chest trying to fight the cold. He raised his own eyebrows at my question. "Uh- I'm walking you home. What does it look like I'm doing?" A light chuckle escaped from my body, the cold air puffing out in the space between us. The same boy that ignored me earlier tonight now wanted to walk me home? I frowned. "I don't even know you." He seemed to think about my statement as I started walking again, heading towards my campus apartment. He followed. "Okay yes, that might be true. But your brother is my friend and I'm not going to let his sister walk home in the cold and dark... especially after what just happened."
He continued to follow me, neither of us speaking as I let him. He was right. I didn't really want to walk alone in the dark and my apartment was a considerable distance from the frat house party we were at. I shivered as it seemed to get colder, scolding myself for not bringing a warmer jacket. The cold never usually bothered me. "Luke never told me you guys were twins." Michael's voice cut through the cold, causing me to jump a little as I forgot he was there. I turned my head to look at him. "Ah, yeah it's not really something we think about too often. And people never question it because they just assume he's my older brother. Technically I'm older than him." I explained but he didn't answer or acknowledge that I even spoke. I scoffed and rolled my eyes.
My apartment building came into view as we rounded the corner. I sighed at the sight of it and fished my keys out of my jacket pocket, unlocking the main entrance door before turning back to look at Michael. He hadn't spoken since the twin conversation. "For some reason you don't like me very much, do you?" I questioned him but he just stepped forward and grabbed a hold of the door handle, pulling it open for me. "Goodnight, Evelyn." Was all he said before gesturing for me to enter the building and as I entered, he let go of the door and walked away. What the hell?
