Chapter 19: No Such Thing as Safe

This chapter is told by the POV of Devin

The next few months are cold and snowy, Milton lights fires in the fireplace and Antonio broke his cast off since he can heal himself now. He was also sitting by the tree I had broken one day when it began to sprout and grow. He would go out every day and sit by the tree and watch it grow more and more whenever he was near it, while Madeline played in the snow manipulating it into shapes and figures with her powers. I have been training with Steven every time the snow stopped falling. He has gotten stronger and faster but still lacks any true viciousness that he may need one day. Beth and Madeline's dad have been taking care of Kelly. She's woken up for brief periods of time every once in a while but overall she's still doing bad. The others have been playing board games and being bored out of their minds.

It's a decent day in March and I decide that we should all go outside and test ourselves to see if we are ready for the journey to the lab once we leave here in a month

"Ok guys" I say as I get everybody outside "We are going to play a game"

"What kind of game?" Jacob says softly

"A game of speed and skill. A game to test your teamwork and readiness to deal with challenges. The game.. of Soccer" I say grinning. A few of them cheer and the others groan

"Soccer? How is this going to help us train?" Steven asks confused

"It's going to help because it's a special game of Soccer. The teams will be me, Madeline, Antonio, and Milton vs you, Desmond, Mike, Oliver, and Jacob. Beth will be the ref" I say and Beth sighs in relief

"How is this fair at all?" Desmond asks irritated

"We get to use our powers, and you get an extra person" I say smirking "This game will help us control our powers and you be able to deal with a more powerful foe" Everybody grunts and nods then goes out onto the makeshift field Madeline's dad put together. They split into teams and the game begins.

I spend the game guarding people and paralyzing them for a short few second with a small shock. Madeline and Milton use their powers to create a line on the field where it is on fire and slippery with ice. Antonio is goalie and doesn't even need to do anything. The power team wins 13-0 during the hour long game

"Well, I guess that was expected" Antonio laughs at the destroyed field

"That was so unfair" Desmond says walking back into the house

"That was fun to watch" I hear from the upstairs window, its Kelly! Shes awake. That's great

"Kelly! Goodmorning!" Antonio yells up to her happier than I've seen him in a long while. She waves to everybody smiling and everybody waves and hollers back to her. Everyone seems so happy until the loud sound of a gunshot rings through the air

"What the hell was that?!" I ask turning to Madeline. She shrugs and another shot rings out as a bullet hits the ground next to my foot

"Run!" Antonio yells then begins towards the house. I turn and grab Beth's hand then rush to the house. Antonio is the first inside followed closely by me and Beth with the others right behind us. Alot more gunshots ring out as bullets whiz past our bodies barely missing us. Everybody comes rushing inside. The only two left are Steven and Jacob. They are hiding behind Antonio's tree

"Run! Hurry up!!" I scream then run back outside shooting electric bolts into the trees from where the bullets are coming from. Steven and Jacob run as fast as they can to the house. I run behind them still shooting.my electricity. Almost to the house. So close. We've got this. I stop dead in my tracks along with Steven. Jacob stands there wobbling back and forth. He spits blood out of his mouth then falls dead to the ground with blood flowing from the bullet hole in his heart

"Nooooo!!" Steven yells and collapses next to his dead friend. He looks up with tears in his eyes at me. I can't do anything but stare back at him. A S.W.A.T team member steps out of the trees and points his gun at me and Steven. Steven stands up and begins walking towards the S.W.A.T team agent. The agent points his gun up and aims for his head

"Stand down or I'll shoot" he threatens. Steven raises his hand and walks closer. The agent pulls the trigger and a bullet goes flying towards Steven and stops midair before his hand and hovers there. The other agents hiding in the thick of trees begin shooting and every bullet gets stopped midair. When the shooting stops Steven turns his head to me

"Run.." he says then turns back to the agents. I run inside and slam the door behind me

"Everybody out the back now!!" I yell and heard the people out

"I'll watch your backs! Protect my daughter!" Madeline's dad shouts to me then grabs his shotgun. I have no time to thank him and run out the back. Five S.W.A.T trucks pull into the driveway as we begin running across the field of corn

"Half of us go this way the rest go that!! We'll find eachother later if we can!!" Milton yells then turns around and torches the field then turns and runs the opposite way as me. As we run I turn back and see Madeline's dad being drug out the back door probably dead. I can't see Steven anymore but I know he made it out of there. He just had to.
